Off The Beaten Path – Honeymoon Adventures

Tranquil laid back vacations not your style? Try planning active adventure honeymoon. When a cookie-cutter honeymoon just won't cut it, plan a honeymoon adventure to begin your married lives that matches your unique style. Check out these unique honeymoon destinations from all corners of the globe, including a South African safari and a jungle escape in Belize.

Blancaneaux Lodge Belize
Located in San Ignacio's Maya Mountains, Blancaneaux Lodge is a luxe jungle getaway with plenty of style, thanks to the personal touches added by owner Francis Ford Coppola. The location may be far removed from civilization, but there's no roughing it with meals prepared from the harvest of the sprawling organic garden and the Waterfall Spa that's equal parts fancy and eco-friendly. Revel in married life on a hike to the hidden rock pools on the trail leading to Big Rock Falls or just laze the day away by the freshwater infinity pool. Book the Honeymoon Package for a stay in the well-appointed honeymoon cabanas coupled with all meals, a horseback-riding adventure and excursions to the area's Mayan ruins, including a 4WD off-road trip to the Mayan citadel Caracol and a canoe trip through remote Mayan caves.

Kruger National Park, South Africa
Royal Malewane
Set off on a unique honeymoon safari exploring the wilds of South Africa's famed Kruger National Park. Royal Malewane's 6 suites promise the ultimate luxurious wildlife experience; the resort also features indoor and outdoor safaris, private plunge pools and a wooden deck with a thatched gazebo where you may even observe wildlife over your morning tea. By day, set off in an open Land Rover with experienced guides and trackers to get up close to Africa's Big 5 - buffalo, elephant, rhino, leopard and lion. When the sun goes down, it's time for dinner al fresco near an animal watering hole with culinary treats and wine pairings that may be customized to your tastes. Infuse your honeymoon with even more fun by taking a hot-air-balloon ride, spending a day at a nearby wildlife rehabilitation center or playing a round of golf.

Montenegro
Aman Sveti Stefan
Plan a refined and elegant honeymoon on the Adriatic Sea in Montenegro, a Mediterranean escape that is gaining popularity with globe-trotting Westerners. Sveti Stefan is an intimate coastal getaway befitting royalty. The posh stone estate on the small islet was once a popular vacation spot for the rich and famous in the 1970s, playing host to starlets like Sophia Loren. Amanresorts took over and reopened the doors in 2008, rolling out rooms slowly, beginning with a collection of 8 posh suites at Villa Miločer, and drawing attention back to this Balkan paradise. Honeymooners are granted plenty of privacy in the suites and guest cottages and can enjoy the natural beauty of the pristine beaches framed by towering mountains and lush forest. As Aman completes its undertaking, the resort lives up to its glamorous past with fine restaurants and a spa where you can forget every last pre-wedding stressor with an indulgent massage.

The brunch at the Makana Terrace can be described as unreal. Even as a take-your-breath-away beautiful view, every single bite of food being unbelievably delicious and beautiful, it is just amazing… The staff is always extremely pleasant and extremely accommodating.

We need to make note that this a Sunday Champagne Brunch and is a luxurious experience. Chef Desplechin and Chef Brinson do a major change up of the Sunday Brunch once a quarter to freshen it up according to the seasons. The brunch is trending towards becoming not only a tourist treat, but for locals as well, and the change up gives them something new to anticipate each season. This includes updating the dishes to local seasonal offerings, as well as changing the displays and design of the presentation.

The local bird species tend to hang out on the patio. The omelets are delicious but don't you dare miss the pancakes & coconut syrup. Take your time and enjoy the delicious snow crab as well.

In The News: In Flight Entertainment and Connectivity

Air travel photos from the 1960s show smartly dressed, champagne-sipping passengers in spacious airliner cabins. Compare that with the current cramped seats and overcrowded flights and now our flying experiences are getting steadily worse.

But is this the reality? The aviation industry has been massively investing to prove nostalgic travelers wrong. Yes, aircraft may still look similar to those of the so-called golden years. But every single aspect of the air travel experience is currently being overhauled -- all driven by technology. Right at the forefront are airplane cabins.

And key to their transformation is wireless connectivity. With virtually every passenger toting a smartphone, tablet or laptop, inflight Wi-Fi is opening up new ways to engage with air travelers and redefine the flying experience.

On a recent Delta flight the choices on their airborne.gogoinflight.com system there almost too many choices. from TV to major motion pictures. Star Wars was a great choice except for the fact it was a 2 hour movie and the flight was just over an hour in duration.

The Waterfront system, by Panasonic, allows passengers to use their mobile devices to control an aircraft's built-in entertainment. Mobile tech already plays an important role in enhancing travel, from electronic boarding passes to last-minute bids on biz class upgrades.

Some airlines, such as KLM, have even started sending boarding passes and flight alerts through a dedicated airline Facebook Messenger chat bot. But the one area where mobile can become truly transformative is inflight entertainment, with personal devices becoming gateways to a whole range of up-in-the-air services. While built-in in-flight entertainment systems are unlikely to vanish, particularly on long-haul flights, they can work in tandem with the passenger's own devices.
Some airlines are doing away with embedded entertainment systems altogether. They're opting for passenger's handsets to deliver inflight entertainment -- a move that crucially reduces aircraft weight and frees up cabin space. No Internet connection is required, passengers just connect their devices to an in-plane network.

Aeromexico recently announced it would use Gogo's 2Ku satellite-based Internet connection to offer Netflix-enabled flights. "More than 80% of passengers are walking on the plane with their own device," Gogo exec Ash ElDifrawi points out. "Airlines can save the weight and maintenance costs of legacy seat-back entertainment systems and still provide differentiated experiences.

Off The Beaten Path: Conques, France

Conques, France is a former commune in the Aveyron department in southern France, in the Languedoc-Roussillon-Midi-Pyrénées region. On 1 January 2016, it was merged into the new commune of Conques-en-Rouergue.

The village is located at the confluence of the Dourdou de Conques and Ouche rivers. It is built on a hillside and has classic narrow Medieval streets. As a result, large vehicles (such as buses) cannot enter the historic town centre but must park outside. Consequently, most day visitors enter on foot. The town was largely passed by in the nineteenth century, and was saved from oblivion by the efforts of a small number of dedicated people. As a result, the historic core of the town has very little construction dating from between 1800 and 1950, leaving the medieval structures remarkably intact. The roads have been paved, and modern-day utility lines are buried.

The St. Foy abbey-church in Conques was a popular stop for pilgrims on their way to Santiago de Compostela, in what is now Spain. The main draw for medieval pilgrims at Conques were the remains of St. Foy, a martyred young woman from the fourth century.

The original monastery building at Conques was an eighth-century oratory built by monks fleeing the Saracens in Spain. The original chapel was destroyed in the eleventh century in order to facilitate the creation of a much larger church as the arrival of the relics of St. Foy caused the pilgrimage route to shift from Agen to Conques. The second phase of construction, which was completed by the end of the eleventh-century, included the building of the five radiating chapels, the ambulatory with a lower roof, the choir without the gallery and the nave without the galleries. The third phase of construction, which was completed early in the twelfth-century, was inspired by the churches of Toulouse and Santiago Compostela. Like most pilgrimage churches Conques is a basilica plan that has been modified into a cruciform plan. Galleries were added over the aisle and the roof was raised over the transept and choir to allow people to circulate at the gallery level. The western aisle was also added to allow for increased pilgrim traffic. The exterior length of the church is 190 feet. The interior length is 160 feet. The width of each transept is 13 feet. The height of the crossing tower is 80 feet tall.

Chocolate Hazelnut Banana Stuffed French Toast Recipe

There are many, fancy variations on this famous recipe. This recipe works with many types of bread - white, whole wheat, cinnamon-raisin, Italian or French. Serve hot with butter or margarine and maple syrup.

This French toast recipe makes a delicious breakfast or brunch. Make this simple, yet perfect French toast recipe that everyone will love.

French toast is one of those recipes that I absolutely love. I love to make huge platters of it when we have guests for the weekend or Little Buddy has friends who spent the night. But really, my favorite thing to do is to make this perfect French toast recipe for your family anytime you feel like.

Ingredients:

    3 large eggs, beaten
    2/3 cup half-and-half
    2 tablespoons sugar
    1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
    1 teaspoon vanilla extract
    Crisco® Original No-Stick Cooking Spray
8 slices raisin cinnamon swirl bread
    3 ripe bananas, divided
    3 tablespoons butter
    3 tablespoons brown sugar
1/3 cup Jif® Chocolate Flavored Hazelnut Spread
1/2 cup Hungry Jack® Original Syrup
1 tablespoon powdered sugar and/or unsweetened cocoa powder
    Sweetened whipped cream

Directions:

Heat oven to 300°F. Whisk eggs in large shallow bowl. Whisk in half-and-half, sugar, cinnamon and vanilla. Coat electric griddle or large nonstick skillet with cooking spray. Heat griddle to 350°F or skillet over medium heat. Dip bread slices in egg mixture, about 5 seconds each, turning to coat both sides. Cook on prepared griddle until both sides are golden brown. Place on baking sheet while cooking remaining French toast.

Spread one side of each of 4 slices cooked French toast with a rounded tablespoon of chocolate hazelnut spread. Cut 2 bananas in half lengthwise, then in half crosswise. Melt butter in medium nonstick skillet over medium heat. Add banana. Sprinkle with brown sugar. Cook 3 to 4 minutes or until golden brown, turning halfway through cooking time. Remove from skillet, reserving sauce. Arrange banana pieces evenly over spread on French toast. Top with remaining bread slices to form 4 sandwiches.

Cover sandwiches with foil. Bake 8 to 10 minutes to heat through. Slice remaining banana, adding to sauce in skillet. Saute 2 minutes or until golden brown. Stir in syrup. To serve, cut French toast on a diagonal; arrange on serving plates. Sprinkle with powdered sugar and/or cocoa powder. Top with banana-syrup mixture. Garnish with whipped cream, if desired.

Cruise Guidelines Help Everyone Enjoy The Vacation

Cruising offers vacationers the opportunity to unwind and have fun without the pressures of driving unfamiliar roads, deciding where to eat or negotiating public transportation. Today’s cruises are generally laid-back and relaxed, but with upwards of 2,000 passengers on the average ship, following a few basic etiquette rules can make the journey more pleasant for everyone.

Dress Codes

Very few cruise lines today impose strict dress codes, but basic guidelines are provided. During the day, virtually anything goes. Make sure that you are completely dried off when entering indoor areas from the pool, and put on a shirt and a pair of shoes. Swimsuit dining is permitted at the poolside fast-food stands and bars. Most cruise lines provide a newsletter in your cabin each evening. Check the newsletter to find out the dress code for the following evening. On a typical seven-night cruise, the first and last nights are casual, two nights in the middle are formal, and the remaining nights are informal. Most lines ask that you adhere to the evening dress code when dining in the main dining rooms or seeing a show in the main lounge after 6 p.m. You are welcome to dress more casually when visiting other parts of the ship. It is inconsiderate to ignore the guidelines and do as you please.

Deck Chairs

Some cruise passengers try to “reserve” deck chairs by piling books, sunglasses, flip flops or other items on the chairs. This is officially prohibited by all major cruise lines. While it is certainly acceptable to stack a few things in a chair that you plan to come right back to after a dip in the pool or a run to the buffet, the chairs are not your personal property. If you will be gone for longer than 30 minutes, take your things with you, and select a new chair when you return. Also try not to move the chairs around. Passengers in wheelchairs or scooters need a clear path to navigate the ship.

Turn Down the Sound

Portable electronics are wonderful gadgets, but not everyone has the same taste in music. In public areas, devices with sound should be used with headphones. In cabins and on balconies, the volume should be kept at a reasonable level. The same goes for televisions, especially late at night. The party runs until the wee hours on most cruise ships, but some passengers must get up early for a paid shore excursion. Noise is generally allowed, and on some ships actively encouraged, on the open decks and in nightclubs and lounges. When you return to your cabin, however, try to be as quiet as possible. Cabin walls are thin, and noise easily transfers between staterooms and from the hallways.

Lifeboat Drill

The lifeboat drill is a mandatory Coast Guard requirement for all cruise ships. Shortly before the ship sails, all passengers must gather at their designated muster stations for a short review of emergency procedures. You are expected to wear or carry your life jacket from your cabin to your muster station. If everyone participates voluntarily, the drill is short and the cruise can commence. When passengers do not cooperate, it takes longer for everyone. Listening cuts down the need to ask questions and can insure your safety in case of an emergency. Pick up your life jacket 10 to 15 minutes before the drill and begin making your way to the muster station. After the drill, allow disabled and elderly passengers to access the elevators. There are simply not enough elevators to move everyone in a timely manner. If you are able to walk, take the stairs to return your life jacket, and move on to your next destination. The elevators should clear within an hour or so.

Going Ashore

At some ports, the ship must anchor in open water. Passengers are shuttled to shore on small boats known as tenders. Those who are booked on early morning excursions receive priority tender boarding, followed by those with elite past guest status. Everyone else must take a number. Tender ticket distribution is handled differently on each ship, but the process is clearly explained. Pay attention to instructions and wait until your designated time to approach the gangway. Do Not Complain While You Wait, no one cares to listen to grumbling and whining. It's a vacation so lighten up and go with the flow. Instead of complaining, try to strike up a conversation with someone in line. You can meet interesting people while you wait to book a tour or cash a traveler's check.

In The News: Oldest Boeing 247D Makes Final Flight.

With the final flight of the oldest flyable twin-engine Boeing airliner, the world has witnessed a little bit of aviation history. The aircraft touched down for a smooth landing at Boeing Field outside Seattle's Museum of Flight in Washington.
Welcomed by aviation enthusiasts, the crowd broke out in applause as the plane -- sporting a mid-1930s United Air Lines livery -- went wheels down after a 15-minute hop from nearby Paine Field in Everett. It certainly was a special delivery that was years in the making.

The ten-seat plane was undergoing restoration since 1979. Of the 75 total 247s built, it's one of only four remaining 247Ds on the planet, the museum said. From now on, it will be on display at the Museum of Flight as an example of one of the first modern airliners.

This is an important plane. It was one of the first airliners to have retractable landing gear, de-icing equipment and auto-pilot, Boeing said. What really set this airliner apart when it debuted in the 1930s was its top speed: about 200 miles an hour. With seven stops between New York and Los Angeles, the 247 could make the trip as quickly as 20 hours, cutting previous airliners' time by 7.5 hours, according to Boeing.

It was quieter, too. The popular Ford Tri-Motor -- which debuted in 1928 -- had one more engine than the 247, but it could only muster a top speed of about 135 miles an hour. The Ford Tri-Motor was slower and louder than the Boeing 247.

The 247 was more comfortable and its aerodynamic design was sleeker, more modern, even revolutionary.

The Douglas Aircraft Corporation soon followed Boeing's 247 with the DC-2, and it wasn't long before the 247 was outmoded. However, some of the 247s were still flying into the late 1960s, Boeing says.

The 247 -- along with its successors -- was among the pioneer airliners that started the travel industry on a path to where it is now -- carrying an amazing 3.6 billion people every year to points around the globe.

Regent Seven Seas Explorer Biggest Suite On The Water

Her Serene Highness Princess Charlene of Monaco will christen the beloved Seven Seas Explorer® on July 13, 2016. Watch the historic ceremony and grand celebration live from Monte Carlo at 3:00 pm (EST) on ExplorerChristening.com

Just how fancy is luxury line Regent's new Seven Seas Explorer? This week a handful of news outlets getting early access to the soon-to-be-christened, 750-passenger vessel, and we're posting our first photos here and at our Twitter page and Facebook page.

Billed as the most luxurious cruise ship ever, Explorer features some of the largest, most elaborate accommodations at sea, including a single suite measuring 3,875-square-foot -- nearly 50% larger than the average house in the USA. In a first, a woman takes the helm of a Regent cruise ship.

Explorer also has a wide range of upscale eateries including new-for-the-line contemporary French and Asian restaurants, and a newly designed version of the line's signature steakhouse, Prime 7. A stylish spa operated by Canyon Ranch; a two-tiered, 694-seat theater; and an opulent observation lounge that evokes the 1920s are other notable features.

At $450 million, Explorer is the most expensive luxury ship ever built and boast one of the highest ratios of space to passengers in the history of cruising. Like Regent's last two new ships, it's an all-suite vessel. Only a handful of luxury lines, including Hapag-Lloyd Cruises and Silversea Cruises, offer all-suite vessels.

Explorer will be christened by Princess Charlene of Monaco. It initially will sail in the Mediterranean, offering a range of eight- to 14-night sailings starting at $6,799 per person. It'll re-position to the Caribbean for the winter.

Explorer is Regent's first new ship in more than a decade. With its addition, the line has four vessels. Just how luxurious are Regent ships? Click through the carousels below for our exclusive photo tour and behind-the-scenes videos of the line's recently revamped Seven Seas Mariner.

Scheduled to sail on its maiden voyage in a few days, the Seven Seas Explorer will become the world’s grandest and most luxurious of cruise ships. Claiming to “set a new standard in elegance and sophistication,” the ship is intended to indulge its passengers with a Canyon Ranch Spa, extensive gourmet dining, shopping boutiques, a business center, and world-class nightly entertainment.

It will also feature the largest onboard suite ever seen on a cruise liner. The Regent Suite will be spread out over 3,875 square feet and will feature a private garden, an in-suite spa, three marble-detailed bathrooms, two balconies, a walk-in closet, and Hermès and L’Occitane amenities.

Seven Seas Explorer® is spaciously intimate, breathlessly elegant and perfectly staffed to offer Regent Seven Seas Cruises’ special brand of all-inclusive luxury. She will bring elegance and glamour to the world’s greatest destinations, offering exquisite dining options that rival those of the finest restaurants ashore and all-suite, all-balcony accommodations boasting the largest balconies at sea.

Take In Special Events During Disneyland's 60th Anniversary

Disneyland's 60th Anniversary is underway, and with Paint the Night parade, new fireworks, and new World of Color, it’s drawing big crowds. This guide to the Diamond Celebration offers tips & tricks for making the most of your time at Disneyland during this anniversary year, including insight on when to go, where and when to camp out for the entertainment, and other assorted tips.

Since opening in 1955, Disneyland has continued to hold a special place in the hearts of children and adults alike. Here are things you need to know if you are planning to celebrate with Mickey.

As a bit of prefatory information, information about the new stuff, as that can be found in my Disneyland 60th Anniversary Info post nor will I be rating or making value judgments about anything, as I covered that in my Disneyland 60th Anniversary Reviews post. Many people have also asked about how construction for Star Wars Land will affect Disneyland 60th, and that’s not discussed here because it won’t. We do have a separate post on Star Wars: Season of the Force at Disneyland, and what you can expect if you visit during it, though.

Two new songs written by Disney songwriting legend Richard Sherman will accompany the Disneyland Forever fireworks show, according to the news release.

"Paint the Night" will bring memories of the "Main Street Electrical Parade," but this night parade features character favorites from Disney and Pixar films, complete with over 1.5 million LED lights, according to DisneyParks Blog, the official blog of Disneyland resort that reports up-to-date information about the park.

We fully expect the Disneyland Forever fireworks and Paint the Night parade to continue well beyond that, as the new non-seasonal entertainment. The popularity has proven too much for either to simply be replaced. Even right now, during a time that is otherwise the off-season, the fireworks and Paint the Night are incredibly popular. The smart money is on seasonal fireworks running for Halloween and Christmas 2016 in place of Disneyland Forever, while Paint the Night continues to run during both seasons, as expected.

Travel Insurance Is Often Over Looked

With all the weather cancellations and delays plus the special events, we thought it might be a good time to talk about travel insurance.

Travel insurance includes five main types: trip cancellation and interruption, medical, evacuation, baggage, and flight insurance. Supplemental policies can be added to cover specific concerns, such as identity theft or political evacuation. The various types are generally sold in some combination, rather than buying only baggage, medical, or cancellation insurance, you’ll usually purchase a package that includes most or all of them. If you want just one type of coverage in particular, such as medical,  ask for that (though it might come with a little cancellation or baggage insurance, too). Comprehensive insurance covers all of the above (plus expenses incurred if your trip is delayed, if you miss your flight, or if your tour company changes your itinerary).

One of the better changes in recent years is that many companies, such as Travelex and Travel Guard, now offer comprehensive packages that serve as your primary coverage; they’ll take care of your expenses regardless of what other insurance you might have (for instance, if you have health insurance through your job). That means they pay first and don’t ask questions about your other insurance. This can be a real plus if you want to avoid out-of-pocket expenses.

Insurance prices can vary dramatically, with most packages costing between 5 and 12 percent of the total trip. Age is one of the biggest factors affecting the price: Rates go up dramatically for every decade over 50, while coverage is generally inexpensive or even free for children 17 and under.

Policies available vary by state, and not all insurance companies are licensed in every state. If you have to make a claim and encounter problems with a company that isn’t licensed in your state, you don’t have a case.

Note that some travel insurance, especially trip-cancellation coverage, is reimbursement-only: You’ll pay out-of-pocket for your expenses, then submit the paperwork to your insurer to recoup your money. With medical coverage, you may be able to arrange to have expensive hospital or doctor bills paid directly. Either way, if you have a problem, it’s wise to contact your insurance company immediately to ask them how to proceed.

Trip-Cancellation or Interruption Insurance

It’s expensive to cancel or interrupt any prepaid kind of travel, and for a fraction of the trip cost, you can alleviate the risk of losing money if something unforeseen gets in the way.

Medical Insurance

Before buying a special medical insurance policy for your trip, check with your medical insurer — you might already be covered by your existing health plan. While many US insurers cover you overseas, Medicare does not.

Evacuation insurance covers the cost of getting you to a place where you can receive appropriate medical treatment in the event of an emergency.

Baggage insurance for luggage that is lost, delayed, or damaged is included in most comprehensive policies, but it’s rare to buy it separately.
