Hippo Point Wildlife Sanctuary Kenya

Hippo Point House is located on the more beautiful Little Lake to the east of Naivasha in the Rift Valley of southwest Kenya.

This incredible 1930's Elizabethan manor stands as one of the finest examples of colonial excess in Africa. It is a wonderfully out of place edifice, beautifully restored and with just seven lovely bedrooms.

This delicate 115 foot Kenyan Cypress-clad pagoda stands 50 ft wide at its base and offers 4 double rooms and a single inside the nine story construction. Nestling within the surrounding yellow acacia 'fever' trees that surround much of Lake Naivasha, the design is completely accepted by wildlife, fooling short sighted hippopotami to think that the Tower is part and parcel of the landscape, a towering yellow acacia itself. Completed in 1993, Hippo Point is the eccentric folly of Dodo Cunningham-Reid, who wanted to build something special in Kenya for herself and others to enjoy.

Only available for exclusive use, remarkably guests are asked to pay the same per person rate regardless of group size, which makes it a real steal for couples.

As with the nearby tower, Hippo Point House is as good as this kind of madness gets, a truly world class folly.

Upper Irrawaddy River Cruise Burma

This expedition combines scenic interest with a study of local life and culture. We visit the main historic and cultural centers as well as many remoter places well off the beaten track. Such small towns and villages are part of a rich river economy and thriving with local industry and activity. Irrawaddy valley civilization has changed little in hundreds of years. The scenery on  is spectacular and the people are warm, friendly and very hospitable.

The river varies enormously: it is vast with endless winding channels just above Mandalay and then dark and narrow through the 3rd Defile. It is a constantly changing landscape with a stunning back drop of mountains. These places are remote from the modern world and offer a glimpse of a timeless, lost Myanmar far from the usual tourist track. We also visit a number of old monasteries and temples of art historical interest in this the cultural heartland of old Myanmar.

A visit to Pagan to explore a selection of the 3,000 Buddhist monuments and spend time in and around Mandalay with its many cultural treasures and rich Buddhist culture.

This is a real expedition for the adventurous.

Channel Islands National Park of California

The Channel Islands of California are a chain of eight islands located in the Pacific Ocean off the coast of Southern California along the Santa Barbara Channel. Five of the islands are part of the Channel Islands National Park.

Close to the California mainland, yet worlds apart, Channel Islands National Park encompasses five remarkable islands (Anacapa, Santa Cruz, Santa Rosa, San Miguel, and Santa Barbara) and their ocean environment, preserving and protecting a wealth of natural and cultural resources. Isolation over thousands of years has created unique animals, plants, and archeological resources found nowhere else on Earth and helped preserve a place where visitors can experience coastal southern California as it once was.

The islands are home to over 2000 species of land animals, many of which are endemic to the region, and the surrounding waters are swimming with life, from blue whales to seals. Having witnessed over 10,000 years of human life, the islands also boast ancient archaeological wonders.

Transportation to the islands is available year-round only by park concessionaire boats and planes or by private boat. Public boat transportation is available to all islands by Island Packers. Public airplane transportation is available to Santa Rosa Island by Channel Islands Aviation. Private boaters may land on all five islands within the park throughout the year.

The Channel Islands are home to the oldest dated human remains in North America—Arlington Springs Woman (13,000 BP).

Madeira Flower Festival Funchal, Portugal

Held in April of every year, in Funchal, the capital of Madeira Island, The Flower Festival invites tourists from all over the world to enjoy four intense, fun days.

The Flower Festival, that takes place in spring when the flowers are at their best, has been one of the major attractions for both tourists and locals for a long time. This enchanting festival with a parade and floats through the streets of Funchal exhibits and perfumes the air with a multiplicity of floral species of the island, spreading a fairy tale ambiance all over the city centre. In every year’s edition each group presents their costumes accompanied with dances to a newly conceived choreography.

In the past few years a new addition was made to this event. At the ‘Largo do Colégio’ (Colégio Square) you will find the so-called "Wall of Hope",  a wall where children place their own flowers with the objective of building a big flower wall symbolising the hope for a better and more peaceful world.

As part of this event there are other activities like the making of flower carpets in the streets, awarding of prizes for the best-decorated shop window, performances of traditional music groups, a flower exhibition at the ‘Ateneu Comercial’, classical music concerts and a number of variety shows. The highlights of the Madeira Flower Festival are the Children’s parade (held on the first day), the main parade, when tens of flower-decorated floats and costume-dancers make their way through the streets of Funchal.

Canopy Tower Ecolodge and Nature Observatory, Gamboa, Panama

Another unusual hotel but one that will provide you with an unforgettable experience.

In 1965, the United States military built a radar dome to defend their interests around the Panama Canal. The all-encompassing views of the Pacific mouth of the canal, the skyline of Panama City and the canopy of the surrounding rainforest once served to provide great strategic advantage. Now, those same views generate one of the greatest wilderness hotel experiences in the world.

Since being demilitarised, the radar station now contains 12 rooms and a restaurant that looks out over the rainforest in every direction. Enjoying your meal while watching sloths and tropical birds eating theirs is an experience you will never forget.

Your bedroom is at treetop level, no more than 40 feet from the birds.

In the cool Panamanian dawn you can feel Panamá's great rainforest awakening around you. Blue Cotingas and Green Shrike-Vireos, birds normally glimpsed high in the tops of trees, perch right outside your Canopy Tower room.

Up a flight of stairs in the dining room, a cup of coffee, fresh juice and rolls await you.  Settle down at a table next to the window with your binoculars and field guide handy.  Above the endless tropical forest of Soberanía National Park, a ship glides through the Panamá Canal. The howling of a distant troupe of monkeys punctuates the birdcalls.  With unobstructed views, in complete comfort, you greet the morning sun. Through the unscreened open window, nature carries on its morning business.

Don't worry if you are new to birding, this is a great place to start. Dozens of species can be seen right from your window, most of them clearly illustrated in Panamá's excellent bird guides. The Canopy Tower is also a great place for those with a general interest in exploring the tropical forest. Giant, iridescent Morpho Butterflies flash their blue wings at you as you ride up the twisting road up to the Tower. Howler Monkeys startle you with a sudden roar overhead. Each shrub, tree and flower seems to be different from the last, reflecting Soberanía's extraordinary diversity.

Po River Cruise, Italy

A Po River cruise is an enchanting way to experience the charming countryside, rich culture, fascinating art, and palate-pleasing cuisine of northern Italy. From quaint fishing villages to small islands and large historic cities, you'll discover the flavor of one of the most beautiful parts of Italy on a Po River cruise.

Most Po River cruises visit Venice, one of the world's most romantic cities, where you can take a gondola ride through the famous canals before you tour St. Mark's Basilica and have lunch in a small café. On your Po River cruise, you may enjoy excursions to a famous glass blowing factory on the island of Murano, a stop in monument-filled Mantua, which is the setting for Verdi's Opera Rigoletto, and a visit to the lace merchants in Burano. Many Po River cruises also sail to the home of Parmesan cheese, Parma, where you can view wonderful paintings and sculptures and attend an opera.

Yosemite National Park

Yosemite National Park embraces a spectacular tract of mountain-and-valley scenery in the Sierra Nevada, which was set aside as a national park in 1890. The park harbors a grand collection of waterfalls, meadows, and forests that include groves of giant sequoias, the world's largest living things.

Highlights of the park include Yosemite Valley, and its high cliffs and waterfalls; Wawona's history center and historic hotel; the Mariposa Grove, which contains hundreds of ancient giant sequoias; Glacier Point's (summer-fall) spectacular view of Yosemite Valley and the high country; Tuolumne Meadows (summer-fall), a large subalpine meadow surrounded by mountain peaks; and Hetch Hetchy, a reservoir in a valley considered a twin of Yosemite Valley.

Yosemite is full of opportunity! Explore Yosemite by hiking or biking. Spend some time with a park ranger learning about Yosemite or get a broad overview by taking a bus tour.

Built to connect human developments on both sides of the South Fork Merced River, the Wawona Covered Bridge is one of few covered bridges in the region. Built in 1868 by Yosemite’s first guardian, Galen Clark, the Wawona Covered Bridge boasts state significance within transportation, entertainment, and recreation contexts.

Casa da Cisterna, Portugal

Casa da Cisterna is a fabulously restored guest house on several levels in the historical village of Castelo Rodrigo. The town is named after the ruined castle and surrounded by ancient walls with views across the Douro Valley and to Spain.

Seduced and fascinated by the charms of rural life in Castelo Rodrigo, owners Ana and António have converted once ruined buildings next to the ancient water cistern for the village, giving rise to the Casa da Cisterna name. As well as beautifully decorated rooms and cool stone walls, the uppermost terrace has a plunge pool where spectacular views reach far across the roofs of the town to the distant plateau beyond.

The town of Castelo Rodrigo, from which you can see as far as Spain and the Douro Valley, has not had a peaceful history. Yet the beauty of the village, and the moving image of Santiago Matamouros in the church of the Reclamador, will live long in your memory. To walk through the medieval gates of this ancient village is to journey down the paths of history.

National Park and Monuments

A National Monument in the United States is a protected area that is similar to a National Park except that the President of the United States can quickly declare an area of the United States to be a National Monument without the approval of Congress. National monuments receive less funding and afford fewer protections to wildlife than national parks. However, areas within and extending beyond national parks, monuments, and national forests can be part of wilderness areas, which have an even greater degree of protection than a national park would alone.

With summer vacation approaching it is time to consider visiting some of the United States' most beautiful sceneric and historic places. In the next few weeks we will be talking about some of our National Parks and Monuments throughout the country. Their variety is amazing so you are sure to find a destination to your liking.

Vancouver Cherry Blossom Festival

Canada's cherry blossom festival the Vancouver Cherry Blossom Festival Society is a non-profit charitable society established in 2005 in the province of British Columbia.  The City of Vancouver declared March and April the months to honor the more than 37,000 ornamental cherry trees generously gifted from Japan in the 1930's.

As the quintessential symbol of spring, the universal theme of the cherry tree inspires new poetry, art, music, film, design, crafts, photography, and cuisine while inspiring the artist in us all.  Through a wide array of diverse programs from Cherry Jam Downtown, Haiku Invitational, Bike the Blossoms, Japan Fair, BC Blossom Watch Photo Contest, Cherry Scouts Program, Tree Talks and Walks and the Cherry Blossom Viewing Map the festival captures the exuberance of the blossoming with cultural programming for the whole community to enjoy.

This Sakura Matsuri (Cherry Blossom Festival) celebrates modern and traditional Japan through the tea ceremony, festival food, origami, ikebana (flower arranging), sake tastings, guided hanami tours (flower viewing), and Haiku Invitational.  Festivities also include cultural performances of Japanese classical dance, taiko drumming, the Cherry Blossom Dance, shakuhachi (bamboo flute), koto (Japanese harp), yukata dressing, martial arts performances and more!

Inspired by the age old Sakura festivals of Japan, the Vancouver Cherry Blossom Festival uplifts spirits in the city, while the ephemeral nature of the blossoms remind us all to take time now to celebrate life.

Cave - Hotel, Turkey

Ever dreamed of staying in a cave-hotel with all mod cons? Well, now's your chance to make those dreams come true with a stay in the gorgeous Kelebek Hotel, Goreme's most popular place.

Kelebek has a wonderful location, right in the heart of Goreme's historic old village, with spectacular views looking out towards Uchisar and Cavusin.

Until 1993 Kelebek was a family home, and like most homes in Goreme, it was made of a mixture of cave rooms and stone-arched rooms which had been added later. But the history of the site stretches right back to prehistory, to the days when the eruption of Mt Erciyes and then the effects of wind and rain on the tuff created the two fairy chimneys.

In medieval times the rooms in the top of the two chimneys served as simple chapels for local hermits; one of them even has a frescoed cross on the ceiling.

Today Kelebek -the Butterfly in English- has 31 rooms, some of them in the fairy chimneys, some in caves and some of them in the traditional arched rooms . The rooms are divided into six categories: Standard Rooms, Deluxe Rooms, Junior Suites, Suites, King Suites and Presidential Suites.

Suites have spacious cave bedrooms with hand-carved furnishings and locally-made fabrics, marble-walled bathrooms with their own hamam basins, power-showers and bathtubs, and a lovely flower-filled garden with fairy chimneys behind it and the Pigeon Valley opening out in front of it. What more could you possibly wish for?

Everywhere you turn, you'll be amazed at the attention to detail. Kelebek has been constructed out of stones rescued from demolished houses.

Alaskan Cruise Night

On Friday March 2nd 2012 Rawhide Travel and Tours, in conjunction with Robin Selleck of Royal Caribbean International Cruise Lines, held the "KICK ICE ALASKAN GLACIER ROUTE SUPER CRUISE" evening at the Embassy Suites hotel located in Phoenix Arizona at the corner of Greenway Road an Interstate Highway 17.

Bonnie and Dianna from Rawhide Travel and Tours, helped with registration and then the guests with their cheese, fruit and drink selections.

Ron Oster, the owner of Rawhide Travel and Tours, started the evening out by welcoming the guests and talking about the general interest items of the August 22nd through  the 31st.tour that he is leading on the Royal Caribbean Radiance of the Seas.

Ron then introduced Robin Selleck and she presented a brand new video about the Tour that is going to Alaska later this year.  She highlighted the shipboard activities and excursions that are available to those on board.  Robin also had a slide show featuring many of the cities that the "KICK ICE ALASKAN GLACIER ROUTE SUPER CRUISE" will visit while in Alaska.

One important item covered was the fact that the Royal Caribbean Radiance of the Seas was recently remodeled and had many new features added.  They closed out the formal presentation with a great question and answer session.  Ron finished up with a comparison of a complete cruise price that includes so many items that other operators leave out.  The comparison was very surprising when you compare all the features that are included and you save money over the agents that lead with an empty low price.

As the hour wrapped up, many drawings were held and the audience had a fun time getting all of the great cruise perks that were given out.

There are just a few cabins left so please call Rawhide Travel and Tours at 602-843-5100 for more information.
