The Channel Islands of California are a chain of eight islands located in the Pacific Ocean off the coast of Southern California along the Santa Barbara Channel. Five of the islands are part of the Channel Islands National Park.
Close to the California mainland, yet worlds apart, Channel Islands National Park encompasses five remarkable islands (Anacapa, Santa Cruz, Santa Rosa, San Miguel, and Santa Barbara) and their ocean environment, preserving and protecting a wealth of natural and cultural resources. Isolation over thousands of years has created unique animals, plants, and archeological resources found nowhere else on Earth and helped preserve a place where visitors can experience coastal southern California as it once was.
The islands are home to over 2000 species of land animals, many of which are endemic to the region, and the surrounding waters are swimming with life, from blue whales to seals. Having witnessed over 10,000 years of human life, the islands also boast ancient archaeological wonders.
Transportation to the islands is available year-round only by park concessionaire boats and planes or by private boat. Public boat transportation is available to all islands by Island Packers. Public airplane transportation is available to Santa Rosa Island by Channel Islands Aviation. Private boaters may land on all five islands within the park throughout the year.
The Channel Islands are home to the oldest dated human remains in North America—Arlington Springs Woman (13,000 BP).
