Unusual Places: Mackinac Island , Michigan

Looking to go back in time and see some of the countries history, then you have to take your family to Mackinac Island between Lake Huron and Lake Michigan. On Mackinac Island there are no cars allowed, as soon as you get off the boat you get a horse and buggy or a bicycle. There are many places to visit on the island like Old fort Mackinac where British and American soldiers once fought to control the northwest territories. You can also visit The grand Hotel, it use to be one of the largest summer hotels in the world.

In the late 19th century, Mackinac Island became a popular tourist attraction and summer colony. Much of the island has undergone extensive historical preservation and restoration; as a result, the entire island is listed as a National Historic Landmark.

The island can be reached by private boat, by ferry, by small aircraft, and in the winter, by snowmobile over an ice road. Motorized vehicles have been prohibited on the island since 1898, with the exception of snowmobiles during winter, emergency vehicles, and service vehicles.

Downtown Mackinac Island
Historic Downtown Mackinac Island features fur trade era homes and shops, as well as grand Victorian cottages. You will find a unique variety of shops and restaurants on Mackinac Island. Art galleries and world-famous fudge shops abound.

Fort Mackinac
Fort Mackinac was built in 1780 and was closed as a fort in 1895 as it no longer had any strategic purpose. It has been restored to its late 19th century state through efforts beginning in the 1930s. It is is a National Historic Landmark and the sentinel of the Straits of Mackinac for 224 years. Guides are dressed in period costumes. You'll witness cannon and rifle firing demonstrations, explore the real history of Mackinac in 14 original buildings filled with period settings, exhibits and videos.

The Grand Hotel
The Grand Hotel is a Victorian-style structure that opened in 1887. The 1980 film Somewhere in Time was shot on location at the hotel. Ignite your passion for life. This resort is romantic, magical, timeless and unforgettable. No two of the 385 guest rooms are alike. More than three dozen themed named rooms and two-bedroom suites, from the Lincoln Suite to the Hollywood Suite--make for interesting accommodations throughout.

Arch Rock
Stretching nearly 150 feet above the water, Anishinaabe-Ojibwa tradition describes Arch Rock where the Great Creator blew the breath of life into the newly formed earth. Like Devil’s Kitchen and Sugar Loaf, this slowly eroding limestone formation was formed over thousands of years by wind, water and receding glaciers.

Butterfly House
There are two live butterfly displays on Mackinac, Wings of Mackinac Butterfly Conservatory up-Island at Surrey Hills and the Original Mackinac Island Butterfly House & Insect World downtown. Both offer butterflies of every imaginable size and color that dance amidst the tropical plants. Get up close and personal, and for the romantic, both offer their gardens for weddings, renewals, elopements, unions and reunions.

Mackinac Island Fudge
Born in the years following the Civil War, the tradition of fudge making is stronger than ever and fudge remains the Island’s most popular and tastiest souvenir. Be sure to enjoy the annual Mackinac Island Fudge Festival, Friday, August 23, 2013.

There are many sights and activities for the whole family on Mackinac Island, take your family back in time it’s defiantly an adventure worth checking out.

Travel Tips: How to apply, renew or replace a Passport

The process of obtaining, renewing, or updating a passport is something of a tedious, mind-numbing, and overly complex process. While you'll find everything you need to know about the often befuddling process on the U.S. State Department website, here is most information that may make it simpler for you by breaking down the basics—from forms to fees to IDs—and providing helpful links to the appropriate forms and websites.

Getting your first passport

To get your first passport, you'll have to show up in person. Make an appointment at an acceptance facility or passport agency. You likely live near a facility where you can get a passport. Many post offices and even some public libraries can accept passport applications. Arrive at your passport agency with:

• Your filled-in DS-11 application form.
• Evidence of U.S. citizenship.
Previously issued, undamaged U.S. Passport
Certified birth certificate issued by the city, county or state
Consular Report of Birth Abroad or Certification of Birth
Naturalization Certificate
  Certificate of Citizenship.
• Valid identification. Find a list of acceptable ID here
Previously issued, undamaged U.S. passport
Naturalization Certificate
Valid Driver's License
Current Government ID (city, state or federal)
Current Military ID (military and dependents)
• A photocopy of the front and back of the identification you're bringing on clean, white 8½" x 11" paper.
• Your application fee. For a first-time adult passport, the total fee is $135.
• Passport photos. Most major drug stores, such as Walgreens or CVS, will sell appropriately sized passport photos that comply with government standards; this makes things a little easier.

Renewing a passport

You have two options here: Either you have your old passport or you don't. If the former is true, you can apply through the mail as long as your most recent passport is undamaged, was issued when you were at least 16 years old, and isn't more than 15 years old. If you are nodding "yes" to all of that, simply mail in your old passport with the required documents and photos, and you'll receive a new one in the mail in roughly four to six weeks. (Don't worry. You'll get your old passport back.) Here's what you need: Form DS-82, your renewal fee ($110 for an adult), passport photos, and your old passport.

Keep in mind that if you've changed your name since your last passport was issued, include an original certificate or court order that documents this; those without such papers must apply for a renewal in person.

Don't have your old passport? Then you can't get a passport renewed by mail. Head to a passport agency in person.

Lost or stolen passports

If your previous passport was lost or stolen, you'll have to apply for a new one in person. You'll need to bring two forms in this case: the standard DS-11 passport application and Form DS-64, which asks you to describe what happened to your little blue book.

Unfortunately, a replacement passport isn't free. You'll have to pay the standard application fee—$135—when applying for your new passport. Refer to the "Getting your first passport" section above; it lists everything else you'll need to bring with you, including passport photos and identification.

Remember to always report your passport as missing the moment you're sure it's gone. You can do this by calling 1-877-487-2778.

Lost or stolen passports abroad

First and foremost, be prepared! Always travel with a photocopy of your passport and other identification, such as a driver's license or birth certificate; this will make your situation much easier if your passport disappears.

The State Department advises that American travelers get in touch with the closest U.S. embassy or consulate if they lose their passports while abroad. You'll have to go there in person to get a new passport in order to return home. A replacement passport costs $140 and can generally be issued within a few days, or faster if you make a good case that you need it right away. If you don't have the funds, the embassy will help you contact someone at home who can wire money directly to the embassy.

Adding pages to a passport

Do you require additional passport pages?  Beef up your blue book by mailing in Form DS-4085 along with your almost-full passport and the required $82 fee. According to the State Department, it's the right time to ask for more paper when you have two to four empty pages left in your passport. So keep a close eye on the status of your visa pages if you're an avid traveler.

Expediting a passport

You can get your passport expedited in roughly two to three weeks (door-to-door) via the State Department when you pay an extra $60 plus $12.85 for overnight delivery in addition to the standard processing fees. (Processing times can vary, so check the State Department site for the most up-to-date estimate.)

Need it sooner? Schedule an appointment to show up in person at a regional passport agency if you require a passport for travel within two weeks.

We don't normally recommend using passport expediting services, which sometimes charge hundreds of dollars to secure passports in as little as 24 hours, unless you're desperate. If you have enough time to get your passport directly through the traditional government channels, do it that way. It'll save you a ton of money.

You can check the status of a pending passport application here.

Changing your name on your passport

There's no fee for changing the name on your passport if your passport was issued less than a year ago. If the book's more than a year old, though, you must pay standard renewal fees.

To change your name, fill out the appropriate form (use Form DS-5504 if your current passport is less than a year old and Form DS-82 if your passport is more than a year old) and mail it with your current passport, original proof of name change, a passport photo, and renewal fees, if necessary. Read more about tweaking your name on your passport here. And congratulations on your new moniker.

Passports for kids

For children ages 15 and younger, the fees and requirements for getting a passport are a little different than those for adults. Essentially, parents need to provide identification in addition to proof that they are legal guardians for child applicants. Guardians in two-parent households must appear together with the young applicants or provide a notarized statement of consent from the absentee adult. Single parents must appear in person as well. And all parents must show proof of legal guardianship; this would include a birth certificate or a court order.

A passport for a minor costs $105. And the usual—Form DS-11, a standard passport photo, and the appropriate identification for parent(s) and child—must be brought to your local passport office.

U.S. Passport Card

The U.S. Passport Card can be used to enter the United States from Canada, Mexico, the Caribbean, and Bermuda at land border crossings or sea ports-of-entry and is more convenient and less expensive than a passport book. The passport card cannot be used for international travel by air.

Adults (Age 16 and Older): Validity: 10 years - First-Time Applicant Cost: $55 - Previous Passport Holder Cost: $30
Minors (Under Age 16): Validity: 5 years - Cost for All Minors: $40

If you have a U.S. passport book and are eligible to use Form DS-82, you may apply for the card by mail. You can use Form DS-82 to renew your passport book at the same time that your apply for your passport card.

If you have never had a U.S. passport book or are not eligible to use Form DS-82, you must apply in person using Form DS-11.

All passport cards will be returned using First Class Mail. Passport cards cannot be shipped to you using overnight delivery..

Arlington National Cemetery, Virginia

Arlington National Cemetery is both the most hallowed burial ground of our Nation's fallen and one of the most visited tourist sites in the Washington, DC, area. A fully operational national cemetery since May 1864, Arlington National Cemetery conducts an average of 27 funerals each workday--final farewells to fallen heroes from the fronts of Iraq and Afghanistan, as well as to veterans of World War II, the Korean conflict, Vietnam and the Cold War and their family members.

The grounds of Arlington National Cemetery honor those who have served the nation and their families by providing a sense of beauty and peace. The rolling green hills are dotted with trees (some that are older than the cemetery itself), monuments and gardens throughout the 624 developed acres of the cemetery. This impressive landscape serves as a tribute to the service and sacrifice of every individual and their families laid to rest within the hallowed grounds of Arlington National Cemetery.

A first stop on a trip to Arlington National Cemetery should include the Welcome Center, located by the cemetery entrance. In the Welcome Center there are maps, information services (to include grave locations), kiosks for accessing the ANC Explorer, a bookstore and restrooms. The Welcome Center also contains exhibits and displays that tell the story of Arlington National Cemetery and its significance to the nation. The cornerstone of the exhibits is a life-size replica of a bugler playing “Taps”, one of the most recognizable components of a military honors funeral. The Welcome Center opens daily at 8 a.m. and closes at 7 p.m. from April 1 to Sept. 30 and at 5 p.m. from October to March. The Welcome Center is open every day, except December 25th.

The guard is changed every hour on the hour Oct. 1 to March 31 in an elaborate ritual. From April 1 through September 30, there are more than double the opportunities to view the change because another change is added on the half hour and the cemetery closing time moves from 5 to 7 p.m.

An impeccably uniformed relief commander appears on the plaza to announce the Changing of the Guard. Soon the new sentinel leaves the Quarters and unlocks the bolt of his or her M-14 rifle to signal to the relief commander to start the ceremony. The relief commander walks out to the Tomb and salutes, then faces the spectators and asks them to stand and stay silent during the ceremony.

The Tomb of the Unknowns at Arlington National Cemetery in Arlington, VA, is also known as the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, and has never been officially named. The Tomb of the Unknowns stands atop a hill overlooking Washington, D.C. On March 4, 1921, Congress approved the burial of an unidentified American soldier from World War I in the plaza of the new Memorial Amphitheater.  Inscribed on the back of the Tomb are the words: Here rests in honored glory an American soldier known but to God.

Update: Rawhide Travel and Tours Holiday Tree

The little tree is back from vacation and is ready to celebrate Memorial Day. The tree wants to help honor all the men and women who gave their all for the defense of our country and is all decked out in red, white and blue.

Did you know,  that Memorial Day was formerly known as Decoration Day, it originated after the American Civil War to commemorate the Union and Confederate soldiers who died in the Civil War. By the 20th century Memorial Day had been extended to honor all Americans who have died while in the military service. It typically marks the start of the summer vacation season.

Many people visit cemeteries and memorials, particularly to honor those who have died in military service. Many volunteers place an American flag on each grave in national cemeteries.

The practice of decorating soldiers' graves with flowers is an ancient custom. Soldiers' graves were decorated in the U.S. before and during the American Civil War. A claim was made in 1906 that the first Civil War soldier's grave ever decorated was in Warrenton, Virginia on June 3, 1861, implying the first Memorial Day occurred there. There is authentic documentation that women in Savannah, Georgia decorated soldiers' graves in 1862. In 1863, the cemetery dedication at Gettysburg, Pennsylvania was a ceremony of commemoration at the graves of dead soldiers. Local historians in Boalsburg, PA, claim that ladies there decorated soldiers' graves on July 4, 1864. As a result, Boalsburg promotes itself as the birthplace of Memorial Day. The preferred name for the holiday gradually changed from "Decoration Day" to "Memorial Day", which was first used in 1882. It did not become more common until after World War II, and was not declared the official name by Federal law until 1967.

On Memorial Day the flag of the United States is raised briskly to the top of the staff and then solemnly lowered to the half-staff position, where it remains only until noon. It is then raised to full-staff for the remainder of the day.

The half-staff position remembers the more than one million men and women who gave their lives in service of their country. At noon their memory is raised by the living, who resolve not to let their sacrifice be in vain, but to rise up in their stead and continue the fight for liberty and justice for all.

This is a follow-up on Ron's Las Vegas 5k Run on May 11 and we thought you might enjoy the photo that was taken.

Here what Ron said. "93 seconds off my run time but hey, what the heck. Was worth it and I might even use it for my Christmas card picture this year. Anyway, I did the run at 30:31 so my "normal" 10 minute mile. Was a total blast, had NEVER ran on the Las Vegas Strip before so that, for me, was awesome. Very strange running on one of the most famous roads in the world with no traffic. Anyway, it was fun fun fun. Running my next race June 08 in Las Vegas, followed by another run on Father's Day right here in Arizona. I hope to see some of you there?"

In the News: Viking River launches Viking Cruises: Viking Star to set sail from May 2015

Viking River Cruises is ready to branch out into Viking Ocean and will have its first ship, Viking Star, sailing from May 2015.

Viking River has seen unprecedented expansion in the last couple of years, 10 new longships were christened a few weeks ago in Amsterdam and 14 more are being built for 2014.

Its new ocean-going ship will carry 928 passengers and is aimed directly at the market sector currently occupied by premium and luxury lines such as Oceania, Crystal and Azamara.

Viking chairman Torstein Hagen, announcing his plans in the suitably plush surroundings of LA’s Beverly Hilton Hotel,  took a swipe at some of his competitors when he said: “In the race to build bigger ships, many cruise lines have lost sight of the destinations to which they sail.

“With our new ocean cruises, we are applying the same principles behind our award-winning river cruises to our itinerary and ship design; privileged access excursions and on-board experiences.”

Classified as a small ship, the 47,800-ton vessel, to be built at Fincantieri’s Marghera yard near Venice, will have interiors created by London-based SMC Design who have worked extensively with Norwegian Cruise Line and were responsible for the Empire Casino, Champagne Bar, and Queens Room on Cunard flagship Queen Mary 2.

Initial impressions of Viking Star are that the interiors will be much simpler and more contemporary feel.

There will be five stateroom categories, and they all feature balconies, king-sized beds and generous showers.

One of the two swimming pools has a glass wall overlooking the stern.

In keeping with the company’s Nordic heritage, the spa will include a snow grotto, with snowflakes descending through the chilled air, perfect for cooling off after a sauna.

There will be a double-height Explorers’ Lounge at the bow, and a peaceful Wintergarden for afternoon tea.

Restaurant choices include a main dining room with floor-to-ceiling windows that can be opened and specialty outlets such as the Chef’s Table, Italian Grill and Kitchen Table  with no additional charge.  Drinks with lunch and dinner will also be included in the fares, expected to start from around $3000 per person per week.

The claim to have more al fresco dining than any other ship will have to be measured against newcomers such as Norwegian Breakaway, with its extensive Waterfront area, but there is no disputing that Star’s free wi-fi will be a first at sea, unless someone introduces it in the meantime.

Viking Star’s maiden season of cruises in Scandinavia, the Baltic and the Mediterranean is initially on sale only to the US market; it will be later that year before the UK, Australia and New Zealand are invited on board.

Unusual Places: Setenil de las Bodegas, Spain

Welcome to the town of Setenil de las Bodegas in Spain, where around 3,000 inhabitants are living quite literally, under a rock.

Believe it or not, people chose to settle here for practical reasons. The natural caves of Setenil turned out to be ideal living quarters because rather than needing to build entire houses to keep out the heat in the summer and the cold in the winter, all they needed to build was a facade. It is believed people have been living here since pre-historic times.

The town’s name ‘Setenil de las bodegas’ reflects its rich history; setenil, from the latin words septem nihil– “seven times no”, refers to the seven times the Catholic rulers tried to take back the territory from the Moors, the medieval arabian inhabitants who ruled much of Spain for several centuries. Only on the seventh attempt to conquer Setenil were the Catholics able to win the territory– one of the last Muslim strongholds in Iberia. ‘Solid as a rock’ Setenil (unavoidable pun) later began using the cool areas under the rock to store all kinds of local produce in large storerooms, which is how the town earned the second part of the name, “bodegas“, meaning ‘warehouse’ in Spanish.

Setenil’s unique and extreme urban beauty make it one of the main tourist destinations in the Sierra de Cádiz. The houses, some below rocks and others on top of or even inside the rocks, create different street levels, forming charming nooks and  corners such as those in the streets Calle de las Cuevas de la Sombra and Calle de las Cuevas del Sol. The present-day village has its origins in Medieval times and the area today officially referred to as Setenil stands on the ancient Almohad  settlement. The castle overlooking the village is a Medieval fortress (14th-15th Centuries), which retains its keep and a well. Its heritage is completed by the Nuestra Señora de la Encarnación Parish Church, the old Town Hall and the Hermitages of Nuestra Señora del Carmen and San Sebastián.

Nearby places of interest:

The ruined Moorish castle - in theory, you can climb the vestigial tower, if you're careful - there is also the nearby church of the Encarnación, and the multi-tiered warren of steep, narrow streets in this compact, cliff-enclosed town (motorists beware). The tourism center is also housed in a medieval building with a beautiful patterned Moorish wooden ceiling.

If you are driving or hiking in the area of Setenil, there are two notable sites to visit nearby. The magnificent Roman ruins of first-century AD Acinipo, or Ronda la Vieja ('old Ronda'), are about 4 miles away and the views from above the ruined open-air theatre, complete with stage, backstage areas and semi-circular seating, are stunning.

Travel Tip: Luggage Tracking

With all the innovative luggage tracking technology out there, losing a checked bag is no longer a worry. By investing in one of these tracking tools, you will save yourself a lot of stress while traveling.

There’s a new tool called the Trakdot Luggage tracker that goes inside your checked suitcase. It tells you exactly where your bag is in real time. There’s a similar product called LugLoc. The both track your bag from inside using GSM technology,  what cell phones use.  And the battery lasts about 40 days.

Trakdot™ Luggage is constantly monitoring the cellular network to determine its city location. When you fly, Trakdot™ Luggage knows and goes to sleep. Upon arriving at your destination, Trakdot™ Luggage wakes up and reports its new location. Depending on your preferences, a text-message or email is sent to you confirming that your luggage has arrived with you.

LugLoc has a 24/7 Alarm Center manned by a staff with many years of expertise in luggage retrieval. The company has created a unique device to be placed inside your bag. The LugLoc device will provide the Alarm Center the accurate information where it is in less than one minute. Once the bag is located, the Alarm Center will interact with the airlines to follow up the process of returning your luggage.

Of course, all these products come at a price and a monthly fee, about $70.00 a year.  For a cheaper option, go with those luggage tracking IDs from Victorinox or Okoban. Register your tag, and if someone finds your lost bag, they can call a number and the company will reunite you with your bag.

None of these options are foolproof. After all, if the airline ships your bag to Boise instead of Boston, it’s up to them to get it back to you. So double check the airport code when you check it, and make sure you’ve got a luggage tag with your name and phone number clearly marked on the outside and one inside also.

Rainbow Bridge National Monument Utah

Rainbow Bridge is the world's largest known natural bridge. The span has undoubtedly inspired people throughout time, from the neighboring American Indian tribes who consider Rainbow Bridge sacred, to the 300,000 people from around the world who visit it each year.

Though its "discovery" by the outside world was only a hundred years ago, American Indians have known about Rainbow Bridge for centuries. It is also quite likely that prospectors, ranchers, and others happened across the bridge in their wanderings.

Although Rainbow Bridge is immediately adjacent to Glen Canyon National Recreation Area, it is a separate unit of the National Park System. Rainbow Bridge was declared a National Monument in 1910 and, as such, the range of permitted activities is smaller than for the recreation area. Visitors may take the trail from the courtesy dock to the viewing area for the bridge. We ask that visitors respect the religious significance of Rainbow Bridge to neighboring tribes and consider viewing Rainbow Bridge from the viewing area rather than walking up to or under the bridge. Traditional water-based recreation activities such as swimming, fishing, water skiing, etc. are not allowed anywhere within the monument. People may backpack to Rainbow Bridge on the Navajo Mountain trail with the appropriate permit available from the Navajo Nation in Window Rock, AZ.

Rainbow Bridge National Monument can be reached by way of two hiking trails whose trailheads are located in the vicinity of Navajo Mountain. The two trails are located on Navajo Tribal Lands and terminate at Rainbow Bridge National Monument. The trails traverse rough canyon country and are not recommended for the beginning, casual or careless hiker. In summer, the trails are hot and dry; in winter, elevations make them subject to severe cold and high winds. Portions of both trails are subject to flash flooding during thunderstorms. Neither trail is maintained. Be prepared! Search, rescue and evacuation can be time-consuming and expensive. Neither the National Park Service nor the Navajo Nation is responsible for search and rescue operations that may need to be carried out on this trail system..

Although Rainbow Bridge itself has not changed in the past 100 years, the way we visit has changed dramatically. In the early days of the National Monument, a visit to Rainbow Bridge involved a substantial hike from Navajo Mountain. When Lake Powell was built in 1963, it created a new way to visit the bridge - by boat. Today, over 90,000 people visit Ranbow Bridge National Monument annually.

Trips to Rainbow Bridge may be made across Lake Powell in Glen Canyon National Recreation Area using private, rental, or tour boats. From Wahweap, Antelope Point, and Dangling Rope, travel north. From Bullfrog and Halls Crossing, travel south. Proceed to the mouth of Forbidding Canyon (buoy 49), where a floating sign on the right marks the canyon entrance. Follow the canyon about 2 miles to another sign that points the way left through a narrow passage. Proceed with caution! Beyond the wakeless buoys, go slowly so that no wakes, or waves, are made. A courtesy dock is available for short-term docking while people make the 2 mile walk to the bridge.

In the News: The Norwegian Breakaway

Norwegian Cruise Line christened its new ship, The Norwegian Breakaway, May 8, 2013. The art on the exterior hull showing a New York City skyline and Statue of Liberty was designed by artist Peter Max. The ship will homeport from New York

May 8th's launch of the Norwegian Breakaway, the newest ship in the Norwegian Cruise Line's fleet and the latest mega ship to enter the market, is a "game changer" for the industry, said Kevin Sheehan, the line's CEO and president.

"This is a ship," he said, "that will change this industry forever more."

He cited the Waterfront, a quarter-mile stretch of restaurants, gelato stands and shops; the five water slides in the ship's water park, the most of any line; and the three theatrical shows, including the Broadway hit, "Rock of Ages."

But the Breakaway is more than a game-changer for the industry: It's a game-changer for NCL. With the first ship in the line's new class of ships debuting, the cruise line feels it's positioned to compete with premium and luxury cruise lines.

"With the beautiful ships we have, with freestyle proposition, we always had the opportunity to be at the top of the premium category, Sheehan said. "We're on our journey. With this ship, we have the leader in the premium category, and soon Getaway following behind."

Getaway will be the second ship in the class, debuting in Miami in January 2014.

A luxury, all-suite area known as Haven is at the top of the ship. It has its own pool, concierge service, butlers and lots of luxury and hand-holding for the highest-paying cruisers. It's how NCL caters to the luxury customer without losing amenities of a mega ship.

The Breakaway, at its core, is a true mega-ship. It's the largest ship ever to homeport in New York City. It's got a 23,000-square-foot spa and fitness center. It has 28 dining options. It has more than 2,000 staterooms and carries more that 4,000 passengers.

After Getaway debuts next year, the cruise line will move on to another ship class: Breakaway Plus. Sheehan said there are two ships planned for the Breakaway Plus class, and they'll be even bigger than Breakaway and Getaway.

Breakaway will sail seven-day itineraries round-trip from the Big Apple to Bermuda and the Bahamas.

Unusual Places: Plitvice Lakes, Croatia

One of the first locations in the world to be declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site, Plitvice Lakes, located in Plitvice Lakes National Park, is a remarkable and unique sight to see. Ever year, over 1.2 million tourists from all over the world travel to Croatia to see its cascading lakes. What makes these cascades so amazing is that they are all interconnected and follow the same flow. Sixteen of these lakes can be seen from above. The lakes are also well known for their gorgeous colors, ranging from deep blues to vivid greens.

The national park is world famous for its lakes arranged in cascades. These lakes are a result of the confluence of several small rivers and subterranean karst rivers. The lakes are all interconnected and follow the water flow. They are separated by natural dams of travertine, which is deposited by the action of moss, algae, and bacteria.

Animal life flourishes in the unspoiled conditions. The stars of the park are bears and wolves, but there are also deer, boar, rabbits, foxes and badgers. There are over 120 different species of bird such as hawks, owls, cuckoos, thrushes, starlings, kingfishers, wild ducks and herons. You might also occasionally see black storks and ospreys. Flocks of butterflies flutter throughout the park.

Special attractions at Plitvice include the Veliki Splat, a 100 foot waterfall surrounded by nearby boulders to which tourists have access. There is also a large waterfall complex that can be access via a cave in the surrounding rock face.

The main attraction is obviously the hiking and walking in the area. Keep in mind that swimming is not allowed anywhere in the park.  Trails very well maintained and well marked.  It's worth noting that this area is one of the only remaining regions of Europe where bears roam.

Several large hotels have been built by the entrance to the park. These largely cater to older European tourists. If you are looking for less expensive lodging, ask around, some local apartment owners rent out rooms for low prices.

In addition to snack shops at the entrance and exit of the park, there is a large picnic area with various food stands which can be reached via ferry across the main lake.

Tips for When Children Flying Alone

You see unaccompanied Minors flying on almost all flights especially in the summer. It’s been reported that JetBlue has flown more than 40,000 unaccompanied minors in a year, American Airlines about 200,000 and Southwest more than 100,000. Those are staggering statistics.

Today, families are spread across the country and may even be overseas. Many children who’s parents don’t have the ability to accompany their child, travel alone to visit their grandparents and/or other relatives.

Here are a  few suggestions how parents can minimize the problems a child might encounter flying alone, and help them travel safely.

Consider the maturity of your child. Airlines allow children as young as 5 years-old to travel unaccompanied, but many children are not capable of traveling without a parent. They may not be able to handle the unusual situations that can occur when flying, such as long delays, difficult weather conditions, and rescheduling.

Make sure you know all the airline’s rules and policies about unaccompanied minors before making a reservation. Understand what supervision of your child they promise, what happens if flights are diverted or delayed, and what they require of you as the parent.

If your child must fly unaccompanied, schedule only direct, nonstop flights, if possible. This minimizes the total travel time, opportunities for something to go wrong due to weather and mechanical problems, and the chance your child would encounter an overnight delay requiring them to stay in a hotel room alone, in a strange place.

If an intermediate stop, or change of planes is unavoidable, minimize the number of stops, and schedule plane changes at smaller, less difficult airports, if possible.

Book morning flights. If their flight is delayed or canceled, you have the rest of the day for alternate plans.

When you make your child’s reservation, make sure your child has a seat near where flight attendants’ are for much of the flights, and where they generally sit during take off and landings; the galleys.

Make sure you tell your child what to expect at the airport(s), during the flights, and at the pickup airport. Familiarize them with their itinerary. Don’t just explain the nuts and bolts of what will happen, explain what kind of experiences they should expect. This is especially important if it’s their first flight.

Be sure your child knows they must inform a flight attendant or other airline representative, if they encounter usual and potential harmful situations.

Make certain your child knows they should never tell another passenger their full name, address, phone number, where they are going, and other personal information.

On the day of the flight, make sure your child is well rested. Get to the airport early to have plenty of time to get to the gate with them, to reduce their anxiety and stress level. Make sure your child has a complete copy of all emergency and contact information, their itinerary, travel documents, and a brief medical history, plus written instructions about handling flight problems. Make sure they have money to pay for necessities during their travel.

Being able to communicate with you at any time will reduce your’s and your child’s anxiety. Give your child a cell phone with your phone number preprogrammed. If they don’t have a cell phone of their own, get them a prepaid phone. They’re inexpensive. Tell your child to call if there’s a problem, when they complete each part of their journey, or just to talk to you, anytime they want, except while in the plane, of course. Make sure they know how to call you from a public phone in case the cell phone dies.

Give your child a photo of you and the person who will be picking them up. This will help quell possible ID problems at the end of each flight.

In addition to a checked-in bag, if necessary, send them with no more than one carry-on, which they can physically handle themselves. Make sure you pack items to occupy their time while in transit like a book, Mp3 player, and games, with earphones.

Pack food for your child, so the have food they like. Purchase juice or water for your child after you pass through the security checkpoint.

Never leave the airport before your child’s plane is in the air.

Be sure the person picking up your child has their ID, knows the rules they must follow, and is at the airport early, in case of problems.

Hagerman Fossil Beds National Monument, Idaho

Did you know horses evolved in North America?  The Hagerman Horse, Equus Simplicidens, was the first true horse but its’ bones most closely resembled Grevy’s zebra bones. Equus simplicidens is the official Idaho state fossil.  The Hagerman Horse Quarry, a national natural landmark, is recognized as one of the most important sites in the world related to the fossil history of the horse.

Hagerman is home to over two hundred different species of fossil plants and animals: including Sabertooth Cat, Mastodon, Bear, Camel, Ground Sloth, and many other species.  Over 3,000 new fossil fragments are found each year.

Located on Route 30 in Hagerman, ID across from high school, the Visitor Center has real fossils, informational DVD, a discovery corner, and programs.

Hagerman valley is generally sunny, dry, and clear year round. Winters are mild with occasional winter storms, but summers are extremely hot and dry.

"The Valley of the Thousand Springs" is one of those rare natural rest stops that has been serving travelers for hundreds, perhaps thousands of years. The mild, almost snowless winters, hot springs and natural fisheries provided by the clear flow of springs at a constant 58 degrees made the valley a favorite Indian wintering area.
The City of Hagerman, which gives the valley its name, was originally the site of a stagecoach stop (Overland Trail Route) along the Oregon Trail. Remains of this historic pioneer route can still be seen along the west side of the Snake River.

The town itself was officially established in 1892 when Stanley Hageman and Jack Hess opened a combination Post Office/General Store. The town was actually named for Stanley Hageman but a misspelling in the central post office registry changed its official name to Hagerman.
