Leap Year

A leap year is a year containing one additional day.  This is done in order to keep the calendar year synchronized with the astronomical or seasonal year.  Because seasons and astronomical events do not repeat in a whole number of days, a calendar that had the same number of days in each year would, over time, drift with respect to the event it was supposed to track. By occasionally inserting an additional day into the year, the drift can be corrected. A year that is not a leap year is called a common year.

February 29 is a date that usually occurs every four years, and is called leap day. This day is added to the calendar in leap years as a corrective measure, because the earth does not orbit around the sun in precisely 365 days.

The Julian calendar, which was developed in 46 BC by Julius Caesar, and became effective in 45 BC, distributed an extra ten days among the months of the Roman Republican calendar.

Folk Traditions

In Britain and Ireland, it is a tradition that women may propose marriage only on leap years. While it has been claimed that the tradition was initiated by Saint Patrick or Brigid of Kildare in 5th century Ireland, this is dubious, as the tradition has not been attested before the 19th century.  Supposedly, a 1288 law by Queen Margaret of Scotland (then age five and living in Norway), required that fines be levied if a marriage proposal was refused by the man; compensation was deemed to be a pair of leather gloves, a single rose, £1 and a kiss.

In some places the tradition was tightened to restricting female proposals to the modern leap day, February 29, or to the medieval leap day, February 24.

According to Felten: "A play from the turn of the 17th century, 'The Maydes Metamorphosis,' has it that 'this is leape year/women wear breeches.' A few hundred years later, breeches wouldn't do at all: Women looking to take advantage of their opportunity to pitch woo were expected to wear a scarlet petticoat—fair warning, if you will.

River Cruises: Cambodia

Explore the stunningly scenic and culturally distinctive lands that lie along the remarkable Mekong River. Encounter ancient Khmer monuments and the elegant French colonial capital of Phnom Penh in Cambodia; and in Vietnam, visit the floating markets of the Mekong delta, experience the intimate charm of Hanoi’s old city and tour dynamic Ho Chi Minh City, formerly Saigon. Here you will find gracious hosts, delicious cuisine and the natural beauty and rich history along the magnificent Mekong.

Hanoi, take a tour of this unique, thousand-year-old Asian capital where old and new combine in a lush setting of parks and lakes. Pass by the scenic Sword Lake on your way to the vast Ho Chi Minh Memorial, a complex dedicated to Vietnam’s 20th-century Communist leader.

Siem Reap is the gateway to Angkor, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the most important archeological sites in the world. Begin your day with a visit to one of Angkor’s largest Khmer temples, Angkor Wat, built for King Suryavarman II in the 12th century A.D. With its beautiful proportions and extensive, intricate bas-relief stone carvings, it is one of the most spectacular sights in Southeast Asia. Spend some time exploring the fortified city of Angkor Thom, which houses several of Angkor’s most popular sights such as the Terrace of the Elephants and the Terrace of the Leper Kings with their dramatic bas reliefs.

You will visit the hilltop temple of Wat Hanchey, which affords stunning views of the Mekong River. The temple itself dates back to the 8th century and it is surrounded by smaller religious monuments dotting the hillsides.

Dock along the lovely waterfront of Cambodia’s capital, Phnom Penh. See the magnificent Royal Palace with its spectacular Silver Pagoda, built in the 19th century by the French but inspired by the centuries-old architecture of the Khmer.

Sail down the Mekong, one of the world’s great rivers, toward the Vietnamese border. The Mekong is truly the Mother River of Southeast Asia, sustaining civilizations through the centuries. Pass by some of the Mekong rice fields—the Khmer empire was founded on a rice surplus and rice is still the main staple of Vietnamese cuisine.

Visit Cu Lao Gien Island where you see the monastery of St. Paul of Chartres, built in 1875 and later known as “la Providence.” Once a thriving mission with an orphanage, a hospital to treat leprosy victims, a school and a hospice, it serves today as a retreat for some 180 retired nuns.

Disembark in My Tho, a busy river port not far from the capital of Southern Vietnam, Ho Chi Minh City, formerly known as Saigon. Take a stroll along Dong Khoi Street, the main shopping boulevard in the old colonial heart. See the grand city hall, the old opera house with its soaring arched entryway, the Chinatown area and a Lacquer Factory.

Island Hopping Hawaiian Style: Hawaii Cruise

On a typical Hawaiian cruise, you get to hop from one tropical island paradise to another. Most cruise lines dock on seven island port cities where they let their cruisers experience what the island has to offer for one to two days.

Ouahu is the home of Honolulu, the capital city of the state of Hawaii. It quarters various landmarks and attractions that are famous all over the world. Some of these attractions are the Waikiki Beach, the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific, and Pearl Harbor. Honolulu’s landmarks are more or less only a 10-minute drive from the harbor, giving you ample time to discover the various spots that the island has to offer.

Hilo is a perfect combination of both historical and contemporary landmarks. Places to visit while you are on shore are fish auctions, street markets and fabulous gardens. You’ll not only get to experience life in Hilo with the Aloha Spirit, but you can also tour the renovated downtown areas that nestles shops and cafes catering to tourists and locals alike.

Frequently acknowledged as one of the world’s most beautiful islands, Maui is certainly a great island to explore on your time ashore. The lush and luxuriant valleys of the island, compounded by sandy coves and golden beaches, make Maui a perfect island getaway. While in Maui, you can explore the Haleakala Crater which is the largest dormant volcano in the world, the verdant rainforests of the nearby West Maui Mountains, and the art galleries of Lahaina.

Lihue is located in the Hawaiian garden island of Kaua’i. Upon reaching shore, I suggest you hail a cab and start exploring all the historical landmarks there is on the island. These spots include Grove Farm Homestead, the Kauai Museum, and a wide array of old churches. You can also enjoy the pristine beaches or drop by the island’s amazing canyons and breath-taking waterfalls. In Kauai, you can also check out some private surfing lessons by inquiring about it at your ship’s excursion desk.

Molokai’s history has always been along the context of its being an island of special power, not physical power but of the spiritual kind. Today though, a power of different kind is being attributed to it. Molokai is the island that is heralded as the Most Hawaiian Island –in the sense that it’s the island with the largest population of Hawaiian native residents. In Molokai, you can visit and enjoy Hawaii’s longest white sand beach, or explore the world’s tallest cliffs. The island remains a remote and peaceful destination with no crowd of tourists hanging around, giving you a serene atmosphere to enjoy.

Hopping from one paradise Hawaiian island to another is just one of the perks in choosing a Hawaiian cruise. Waking up to a new port and a new place to explore can be really entertaining and memorable.

Spring Flower Series: Cherry Blossom, Japan

Spring brings crisp air, emerging greenery and Cherry Blossoms in Japan. Cherry Blossoms, “Sakura” is the national flower of Japan and is held in reverence throughout Japan. A great many festivals are held to honor and celebrate the beauty of the cherry blossom. Cherry Blossom begins to bloom from the southern island of Kyushu in late March and moves northward blooming in early May in Hokkaido.

Takada Park in Joetsu city, is  well known for night time viewing of cherry blossoms. Takada Castle which is on the grounds is lit by over 3000 lanterns hanging from 4000 cherry trees. This illuminates the park and provides a festive mood for park goers. The moat surrounding the castle reflects the light of Takada castle and the lanterns creating a mystical atmosphere.  During the day visitors are able to walk down Sakura Road, which is a narrow path, lined with cherry blossom trees on both sides.

Himeji Castle is well known as one of the 3 most famous castles in Japan. It is also a favorite of cherry blossom watchers. It hosts the Himeji Castle cherry blossom viewing Fair which features music performances.  With over 1000 sakura trees on the grounds, it is a very popular spot in Japan for viewing.

Hirosaki Park is built on the grounds of Hirosaki Castle in Hirosaki. With over 2600 cherry blossom trees, it is touted as the best spot to view cherry blossoms in the Tohoku region. The cherry blossoms are set against the white walls of the castle and the pine trees. Over a million people annually visit Hirosaki Park during this time which usually runs from late April to early May which coincides with Golden Week in Japan.

The viewing of cherry blossoms in Japan is more than just an appreciation of their beauty.  Festivals can be found throughout Japan due to the “sakuras” stature as the national flower. It is a time to enjoy good sake, good food, family and the beauty of spring.  You will be in awe by the Cherry Blossom.

Yangtze River Cruises (continued)

The first gorge that the boat will pass through is the Qutang Gorge. It is quite the sight to see. The surrounding riverbanks begin to climb and narrow as the mountainous region envelops the Yangtze. Towering above the gorge are bluffs on either side. They are said to resemble royal guards keeping a close eye on a protected door. The water rushes through the Qutang Gorge with great forces. The racing water below and the cliffs above make tourist feel as if they have fallen into a deep chasm. You are going to want to be on deck for this spectacle!

Just after passing through Qutang Gorge, the cruise ship will slowly enter Wu Gorge. The beauty here is unmatched and has been inspiring artists for years. Lush green flora covers the banks and surrounding hills. Towering distant peaks, called the Twelve Peaks of Wu Gorge, are often shrouded in fog.

The cruise will make a small excursion to the Daning River Small Gorge. The Daning is a main tributary to the Yangtze and covers over 250 kilometers (150 miles). In contrast to much of the Yangtze, the Daning is quite clean, clear and bright green. The trip to the three Small River Gorges will take you and your group though the Longmen Gorge, the Bawu Gorge and the Dicui Gorge. Impossible to imagine, but the scenery here is just as beautiful, if not more so, than that of the Wu Gorge. Waterfalls, plant and flower life, as well as river wildlife, are easily spotted on this adventure. Look up and try to locate the Ancient Plank Road up on the high cliffs above. This serene side trip will be a perfect way to relax, unwind and really enjoy all of the Yangtze’s beautiful scenery.

After sailing back onto the Yangtze, the cruise is set to take you through the Three Gorges Ship Locks. The ship locks are used to make shipping, traveling and transportation on the Yangtze more efficient, faster and cost-worthy. They have upped the millions of tons of freight capacity on the river by ten fold. Each ship locks is made up of 5 stages and can take up to 4 hours to pass. The locks stretch just under 300 meters (around 900 feet), just 35 meters (115 feet) wide and raise or lower the level of the water to allow large ships to bypass river obstructions such as dams or rapids. Traveling through the ship locks is a one of a kind experience. The contrasting technology and industrialism with the beautiful surrounding scenery make for an interesting comparison.

The cruise also allows ample time for visiting the Three Gorges Dam site. The Three Gorges Project, consisting of the dam, ship locks and a hydroelectric station, are one of the modern wonders of the world. Being able to control some of the most traveled waters in the world allows China and its economy to grow rapidly and efficiently. The dam itself is massive. It stretches a distance of close to 2,300 meters (7,500 feet, over one mile!) and is around 115 meters (375 feet) wide. Building this project has required almost 30 million cubic meters of concrete. The completion of the dam in 2006 had great impact on the Yangtze. The newly dammed area now rests 175 meters (575 feet) above sea level. Harnessing the power and force of the river, the hydroelectric station powers millions of people in the surrounding area and is the largest of its kind. The dam also prevents potential devastating flooding downstream by allowing for give in its flood storage space.

There is no hiding the fact that the Three Gorges Project has been both welcomed and controversial. While some see it as a true engineering marvel, others are concerned about its effect on local Yangtze wildlife and other environmental issues. Although both sides have valid arguments, it is refreshing to see that local people are already benefiting from the safety and power generated by the dam. Being one of the largest and best-known structures in the world, it is sure to be the highlight of your Yangtze River cruise.

Located downstream from the Three Gorges Project, Yichang is an important port on the river. Often referred to the “Gateway to the Three Gorges” the city has lots to see and experience. If staying in Yichang for a while after the cruises completion, check out the Chinese Sturgeon Museum, Sanyou Cave or Baima Cave, the Xiaoting Ancient Battlefield or take to the waterways again for a Shennong Stream excursion. Or feel free to just enjoy the city for all that it has to offer.

Presidents' Day

Until 1971, both February 12 and February 22 were observed as federal public holidays to honor the birthdays of Abraham Lincoln (February 12) and George Washington (February 22). In 1971 President Richard Nixon proclaimed one single federal public holiday to be observed on the 3rd Monday of February, honoring all past presidents of the United States of America.

The federal holiday celebrated on the third Monday in February is not officially called Presidents' Day. Instead, it is Washington's Birthday. There was an attempt in 1968 to officially name it Presidents' Day. However, this suggestion died in committee. Many states, however, choose to call their own celebration on this day "Presidents' Day."

Traditionally, many celebrated and continue to celebrate Washington's Birthday with desserts made with cherries. Cherry pie, cherry cake, bread made with cherries, or just a huge bowl of cherries are often enjoyed on this day. Of course, this relates to the legendary story that Washington would not tell a lie when asked if he cut down a cherry tree.

On February 22nd of almost every year since 1888, Washington's Farewell Address has been read in the US Senate. While this does not happen on Presidents' Day, it is an annual celebration of Washington's Birthday that stems from 1862 when the Address was read as a way to boost morale during the Civil War. This address was and is so important because it warns of political factionalism, geographical sectionalism, and interference by foreign powers in the nation's affairs. Washington stressed the importance of national unity over sectional differences.

Aurora Ice Museum

Fairbanks, Alaska is the capital of ice art in the world and home to the World Ice Art Championships. Many top ice artists in the world make Fairbanks their home.

The Aurora Ice Museum was built as a way to boost tourism at Chena Hot Springs Resort, located 60 miles northeast of Fairbanks while simultaneously offering year-round employment for Steve Brice 15 time world ice carving champion and wife Heather Brice six time world ice carving champion.

Chena Hot Springs erected the first version of the Aurora Ice Hotel ( renamed the Aurora Ice Museum in January, 2004). The Ice Hotel was the first of its kind in the United States, and one of just a handful worldwide. The museum features a gallery and ice bar, overhead chandeliers made of individually carved ice crystals which change color every six seconds mimicking the northern lights, countless sculptures including a gigantic chess set, life sized jousting knights, an ice fireplace and four galleries with varying themes.  Due to issues with the fire marshal, the Aurora team are not allowed to advertise the availability of bedrooms... however, they exist and you should ask at reception for use. Inside the hotel there are 4 ice galleries- one is an igloo with skylight, one has a polar bear bed and one has a four poster... each one is different, each one is special.

The architect of most of the art is 15 time World Ice Art Champion Steve Brice and his wife, Heather, a six time World Ice Art Champion.

While long daylight hours and summer temperatures in the 90º F range melted the first Aurora Ice Hotel in July, 2004, the project was not abandoned. The second version was completed in January, 2005, with the ambitious goal of making it the only primarily ice structure in the world to stay up on a year round basis.

Because of the high cost of electric power at the site (30¢ per kWh) it was decided to use an absorption chiller design by Energy Concepts Co. and powered by the available geothermal resource to keep the Museum ‘on ice’ year-round.

This chiller was a unique, three pressure design and the first of it’s kind to be built in the world. In September 2005, Chena Hot Springs won an award for the absorption chiller from the Geothermal Resource Council for the best new direct use geothermal project in the United States.

The Ice Museum has been a resounding success, with more than 10,000 visitors touring it each summer. The structure has withstood high temperatures well into the 90º F range during Fairbanks' hot summer months.

Yangtze River Cruises

There is an old saying - "On a slow boat to China" - Well, why not relax on a slow Yangtze River boat on the beautiful Yangtze River. A Yangtze River Cruise will take you through the cradle of China, while giving you the opportunity to see some of the most spectacular scenery imaginable.

Stretching from the highest reaches of the Tibetan Plateau and running all the way to the Yellow Sea at the port of Shanghai, the Yangtze River not only carves the varying landscape of China, but also leaves an impression on all those lucky enough to sail its waters. The Yangtze is China's longest river, reaching almost 4,000 miles in length. The currents, wildlife and surrounding supported foliage differ in each region the river runs through.

While the Yangtze is known to carry large commercial boats and ships in its currents, there are specialized areas, secluded and untouched spots, which are perfect for river cruises. The 400-mile stretch between Chongqing and Yichang allows for visitors to interact with local villagers, witness unique customs and rituals and even come face-to-face with some of China best known animals. Whether you decide on a short 3 day trip, or a longer 10 day journey, the river will show you sites like you have never seen before.

Many tour cruises begin their journey from Chongqing. The municipality, located in southwest China, is home to over 28 million people and one of the five national central cities of the People's Republic of China. Many Yangtze Cruises depart from this area and make their way downstream to the Three Gorges Dam. You could not ask for a better way to open the first chapters in your cruise travel story. Chongqing is an important manufacturing and shipping hub for all of southwest China. It was founded on the local waters, at the intersection of the Jialing River and the upper reaches of the Yangtze. The weather is hot and humid in the summer and mild in the winter. Within the region’s borders lies a wealth of water reserves, mineral resources, dense forests and foliage as well as colorful and abundant flora and fauna.

The tour boat will slow and make a stop its fist stop at Fengdu. There is over 75 Buddhist and Tao temples in the city of Fengdu, most of which are nestled up on a hill on Ming Mountain. Not only is the town shrouded in mysterious, ghostly presences and protectors, but there is also a necropolis in the vicinity that was modeled after the Chinese Hell in Taoist mythology. Lifelike statues of ghosts, demons and spirits of legends are carved out of white, luminous stone, giving them an air of otherworldliness. Chinese Lunar festivals in the first half of March bring many visitors and believers to the city. In addition to the eerie statues, Fengdu is home to the largest in-situ statue in the world. Nicknamed The Ghost King, the carving is massive at 138 meters (452 feet) high. Most visitors to the spot arrive by boat and spend a few hours at this delightfully phantasmal tourist site.

Valentine's Day History & Facts

The modern St. Valentine's Day celebrations are said to have been derived from both ancient Christian and Roman tradition.

There are many opinions about the origin of Valentine's Day. Some historians think it originated from St. Valentine, a Roman who was martyred for refusing to give up Christianity.

He died on February 14th, circa 270 AD, the same day that was devoted to Juno who was the Queen of the Roman Gods and Goddesses.. Legend also says that St. Valentine left a farewell note for the jailer's daughter, who had become his friend, and signed it "From Your Valentine".

Other aspects of the story say that Saint Valentine served as a priest at the temple during the reign of Emperor Claudius. Claudius then had Valentine jailed for defying him.

In 496 AD, Pope Gelasius turned the Roman holiday Lupercalia into a Christian feast day and set its observance a day earlier, on February 14th. He proclaimed February 14th to be the feast day in honor of Saint Valentine, the Roman martyr who lived in the 3rd century. It is this St. Valentine whom the modern Valentine's Day honors.

Today the celebration of Valentine's Day has become one of sweethearts, chocolate, gifts and celebrations about the love of your life, at least the current one.  Special dinners either out or provided by the spouse or boy friend have also been added to honor your Valentine lover.

Hawaii Vacation: Hawaii Island, The Big Island

Hawaii Island isn’t just big, it’s still growing. The Island of Hawaii is the youngest island in the Hawaiian chain and is also by far the biggest, providing a vast canvas of environments to discover a variety of unrivaled natural wonders. This is the home of one of the world’s most active volcanoes (Kilauea), the tallest sea mountain in the world at more than 33,000 feet (Maunakea), the most massive mountain in the world (Maunaloa) and the largest park in the state (Hawaii Volcanoes National Park). All but two of the world’s climate zones generate everything from lush rain forests to volcanic deserts, snow-capped mountaintops to beautiful black sand beaches. Whether you’re looking for a romantic getaway or a journey off the beaten path, you’ll discover it all on Hawaii, the Big Island.

The Hilo region is blessed with dramatic waterfalls, fertile rainforests and blooming gardens; the geographic flipside of the volcanic Kohala Coast. Home to Hilo International Airport, Hilo is also the gateway to Hawaii Volcanoes National Park located 45 minutes south.

Vast, rural and remote, Hawaii Island’s southernmost region, Kau, seems almost untouched by civilization except around the small communities of Naalehu and Pahala. In this area you’ll discover things have moved along at a pace all their own. Home to most of Hawaii Volcanoes National Park and Kilauea, one of the world’s most active volcanoes, this is a place of natural wonders where you can witness the growth of the island right before your eyes.

You’ll notice the dramatic change in your surroundings as you travel north beyond the dazzling resorts, golf courses and lava landscapes of the Kohala Coast to the lush, undeveloped pastoral lands of North Kohala. Besides being a beautiful area featuring the charming town of Hawi and the amazing Pololu Valley Overlook, this is also the home of some of the most historically significant sites on Hawaii Island from Puukohola Heiau to King Kamehameha’s birthplace.

As you drive 20-minutes north of Kona International Airport, you’ll marvel at the rugged lava fields surrounding you. You may not see it from Queen Kaahumanu Highway, but the Kohala Coast, also simply known as “South Kohala,” is where you’ll find some of the island’s finest resorts.

The sunny Kona District stretches for about 60 miles from Kona International Airport to beyond Kealakekua Bay on Hawaii Island’s lava-lined western coast. Along this expansive area, you’ll find everything from coffee farms to historic Hawaiian landmarks.

On the northeastern side of Hawaii Island, just north of Hilo, lies the Hamakua Coast. With 84 inches of rainfall a year, this area is known for the Hamakua Heritage Corridor drive, a road trip along the coastline that passes by lush tropical rainforests, waterfalls and lovely seaside views.

Driving south out of Hilo, spend a day discovering the Puna District. This area on the eastern tip of Hawaii Island stretches from the sea to the 4,000-foot summit of Kilauea volcano. On the coast you’ll find roiling ocean, black-sand beaches and a spring warmed by the volcano’s steam. Towards the volcano you’ll find rainforests, steam vents and the rugged landscapes of Hawaii Volcanoes National Park.

ICEHOTEL: Jukkasjarvi, Sweden

Eskimos have igloos. Inuit have ice caves. But for most of us, the extent of life under the ice has been pretty limited. Since 1980, four ice hotels have set out to change that. These luxury ice sculptures are full-size resorts built completely from ice. Contractors and ice artists piece together these luxury hotels with 2-ton blocks of ice from a freshwater source.

ICEHOTEL:  Jukkasjarvi, Sweden

Situated in the village of Jukkasjarvi, 125 miles north of the Arctic Circle in Sweden, the original Icehotel has been built every year since 1980. The facility didn't start out as a lodge; at first, it was simply built as a seasonal structure to house an art exhibit.  Organizers got the great idea to keep it year-round and commercialize the concept?

One night a group of foreign guests, equipped with reindeer hides and sleeping bags, decided it would be a good idea to use the cylindrical-shaped igloo as accommodation. The following morning the group raved about the unique sensation of sleeping in an igloo. Quicker than you can say "Absolut," the concept of Icehotel was born.

Accommodations inside the Icehotel are, chilly. Regardless of the temperature outside, the air in the Icehotel is always between 17 and 23 degrees Fahrenheit. Bedrooms have blocks of ice as beds, covered with fur, skin, hides and sleeping bags. In the common areas, there's an ice couch and an ice bar. Mercifully, the bathrooms are heated and off-site.

ICEHOTEL offers a variety of exciting adventures in Jukkasjärvi, Lapland and northern Norway between December 3, 2011 and April 15, 2012.

The wilderness around Jukkasjärvi is a landscape without roads. The four-legged local transport can forge its own paths over the expanses of white snow. Experience the dream-like sensation of being close to everything, animals, snow and nature, with yourself in the center.

Come along on the search for the Northern Lights and enjoy a true winter experience. In the northern hemisphere, in the so-called Aurora oval, Northern Lights can be seen almost every clear night. In Sweden the Aurora oval is usually at Kiruna's latitude, so the chances to see the Northern Lights are probably the best in the world.

Rhine River Cruise

The romantic Rhine River originates in Switzerland and winds it's way through France, Germany and Holland before it reaches the Atlantic Ocean. Along its banks are mighty fortresses, romantic palaces and ancient homes. It is a great trip for f irst-time river cruisers. Since the Rhine flows through four countries, you'll get an overview before striking out on more obscure river routes.

The river nurtures the grapes of countless vineyards and small farms. It is the lifeblood of the region. A trip on the Rhine is trip back through history. Whether you are looking for a romantic weekend break or a long river journey.

Sail past Germany’s castle-studded landscapes and famous Rhine wine region, stopping in quaint Rüdesheim and Cologne, known for its thriving art scene. To the south lie the Black Forest area, Switzerland’s fascinating Basel and the Alsatian capital Strasbourg; to the north, Holland’s Amsterdam and the windmills at Kinderdijk, and Belgium’s medieval Flemish capitals of Ghent, Brugge and Antwerp.

Hawaii Vacation: Oahu

On Oahu, Hawaii’s timeless beauty blends with the modern luxuries of today. Swim in the warm waters of world-famous Waikiki one moment, then enjoy the dramatic mountain views of the Nuuanu Pali Lookout another. Watch the surfers on the legendary North Shore by day, then dance the night away in vibrant nightlife spots around Honolulu. Get a taste of local flavors in Kapahulu one night, then dine at a Five Diamond Hawaii Regional Cuisine restaurant the next. From indulging in urban comforts to escaping to natural wonders, Oahu’s “town and country” experiences are unrivaled. With so much to see and do, you’re never far away from just what you’re looking for on Oahu. Visit the Heart of Hawaii and find the island paradise you’ve been searching for.

Home to the State Capitol, Honolulu is the vibrant epicenter of Hawaii. Here you’ll find everything from historic landmarks and treasured monuments to world-class shopping and a flourishing arts and culture scene. Home to the majority of Oahu’s population, the sprawling city of Honolulu spreads throughout the southeastern shores of Oahu, from Pearl Harbor to Makapuu Point, encompassing world famous Waikiki.

At the foot of the 4000 foot Waianae mountain range and less than 30 miles from Waikiki lies the Leeward Coast. Dryer than the lush Windward Coast, this local area is home to rural towns, off-the-beaten-path beaches and one luxurious resort area.

Set beneath the towering green slopes of the Koolau Mountains, the Windward side offers a scenic alternative to Waikiki, with its dramatic ocean views, quiet beaches and off-the-beaten-path attractions.

The fertile central valley between the Waianae Mountains and Koolau range offers a peek into Oahu’s history. On your way from Honolulu to the North Shore, you’ll pass residential areas as well the Leilehua Plateau in Wahiawa, where you can see sprawling fields that are reminders of Oahu’s sugar cane and pineapple plantation past.

If there is such a thing as a perfect wave, you’ll likely find it on Oahu’s North Shore. The big, glassy winter waves of this legendary surf mecca attract the best surfers in the world, while summer waves are far smaller and more gentle – all of which makes the North Shore the perfect surf spot for beginners and veterans alike.

Spring Break in Nassau, Bahamas

Nassau is the heart and capital of the Bahamas!  Located just off the southern tip of Florida, The Bahamas consist of over 700 islands, offering miles of white sand beaches surrounding small slivers of land. The city of Nassau, on New Providence Island, is the heart and capital of The Bahamas. The island, once a busy center for piracy, is now home to old fortresses, resort areas, Spring Breakers in March, and too many gorgeous beaches to count.

There are 17 stretches of beach on Nassau Paradise Island. Cable Beach, one of the largest resort areas in Nassau, is the first type of beach, offering luxury hotels, casinos and any service and water sport that you can think of. The second type is a deserted beach where you will find nothing but clear blue water, soft white sand and sunshine as far as the eye can see. This is where you can retreat from the stresses of life.

The pastel-colored architecture and thriving flora and fauna throughout Nassau Paradise Island make for more than just a “Wish you were here” postcard: They are testaments to the Colonial influences that still prevail on the island.

The Bahamas were granted independence from Great Britain in 1973. Cultural and historical sites make for easy side trips from the beach. Explore Fort Charlotte's  underground passages, dungeons, a drawbridge and a (now dry) moat. Queen’s Staircase is Nassau's most visited attraction. Climb 65 steps that were not built, but carved by slaves out of a solid limestone cliff in 1793. Fort Fincastle and Water Tower gives 360-degree view of the island from its vantage point at the top of Bennet's Hill.

Boutiques, gift shops, straw markets, retail stores, high-end fashion, bargain hotspots are every shoppers dream. If the variety of the shops isn’t enough to get you excited, Nassau Paradise Island is best known for its duty-free shopping?

Take in a sunset cruise, go deep and explore underwater wrecks and coral reefs on a diving or snorkeling expedition, swim with dolphins or get a kiss from a sea lion, or experience one of the largest water-themed attractions in the world. It is all available on Paradise Island.
