Great Spring Break Vacation

If the winter weather has you itching for a getaway it's time to start planning a Spring Break vacation. Whether you're a student looking to escape with your buddies, or a family of four taking a much needed break, here are some ideas fpr a great Spring Break vacation. Don't forget your SPF and swimsuit, after all the winter cold a little fun-in-the-sun might be just what you need.

San Diego
Southern California’s second largest city is warm year round. Bright, sunny skies are the perfect antidote to long work hours and longer winters. Stop and smell the wildflowers in Anza Borrego Desert State Park. Who cares about responsibility when you can take surfing lessons in the Pacific Ocean or read mystery novels on the beach? That laidback attitude will be a perfect fit as you lie on the beach and listen to the crash of the waves.  San Diego Zoo, with more than 4,000 animals living at the zoo, you’re bound to discover something new. After you’ve had your fill of lions, tigers and giraffes, head over to Sea World to pet dolphins or get splashed by the killer whale, Shamu. Coronado, home to the iconic Hotel del Coronado, is considered one of the best beaches in the country. What’s not to love?

Fort Myers
If you’re looking for a quiet retreat in the sun, away from college kids on Spring Break and colorful cocktails, Fort Myers, Florida is for you. Far enough away from the hustle and bustle of Miami, Tampa and Naples, travelers will find themselves in the middle of a serene beach city lined with palm trees and wildlife preserves. Thomas Edison first discovered Fort Myers in 1885 after the death of his first wife. Edison’s house and Henry Ford’s winter estate are historical museums today and one of the largest tourist attractions in the city. But don't spend too much time touring famous homes instead head straight to the beach. Sanibel and Captiva islands are a haven for weary travelers. The white sand and miles of coastline keep visitors very happy.

Jamaica
The sound of Reggae, the feeling of the white sand beaches between your toes, bikini-clad days and tank-top nights, it’s no wonder millions of tourists continue visit Jamaica every year. The third largest island in the Caribbean, Jamaica has a lot to offer its visitors. Jamaica’s economy thrives on agriculture, mining, manufacturing, finance and of course, tourism. There are some “beware” factors that visitors to Jamaicao should be aware of namely, Jamaica remains an island of widespread crime. Tourists to Jamaica are advised to be aware of their surroundings, and not head off the beaten path. Still, the 2.5 million people who call Jamaica home welcome tourists will open arms. Grab a rum punch or skyjuice (crushed ice with flavored syrup) and head to the beach for a relaxing vacation. Whether your Jamaica vacation takes you to a remote hut or a lavish resort, there’s much to see and do on this island. Or, just sit back and relax. After all, you’re in Jamaica, Mon.

Ski Resort New Year's Parties

If you are going to party for New Year's Eve in the middle of winter, why not do it in style at a ski resort in the mountains with torch parades and fireworks. New York City won't be having a fireworks show in Times Square after the ball drops.

Vail Colorado
Vail features an annual "Torchlight Ski-down" parade down "Golden Peak", a street party, music and a New Year's Eve fireworks "Extravaganza". Many of Vail's fine restaurants host New Year's festivities. The Vilar Performing Arts Center will be showing musical and entertainment acts as well as seasonal performances.  Hang out at the sports bars for bowl games the next day.  Vail's sister resort, Beaver Creek, will also host a New Year's celebration with an afternoon of carolers, ice sculptures and ice skating.

Telluride CO
The action begins at 5:30 New Year's Eve with a children's torchlight parade down "Meadows Trail" down to the bottom of lift #1. Kids interested in participating should meet at the Ski School Lobby at 5:00 and pick up a glow stick. Participation is free. This is followed by a torchlight parade on both sides of the mountain followed again by fireworks. A celebration gathering will be hosted at the Telluride courthouse on Main Street. The clock tower will ring in the New Year. An all ages show with live music will be hosted at the Telluride convention center.

Squaw Valley CA
Squaw is preparing for one all-inclusive New Year's Eve party for the early bird. This New Year's option starts by loading the Cable Car at 5:00pm which ascends to "High Camp" (leaves every 15 minutes). Here your activities include ice skating at the Olympic Ice Pavilion (from 5 till 9 pm), dinner (6-9pm), and celebration of the East Coast NYC Times Square New Year with Champagne at 9:00. It's a great way to get the kids to bed early. The kids can celebrate with their parents or "party" at their own celebration in the High Camp Observation Room. The last cable car descends at 9:40.

Killington Vermont
Party at the Killington Grand Hotel, the Pickel Barrrel or at my favorite the Wobbly Barn. The Killington Grand Hotel will host the New Year's Eve events in the Oscar Wilde Ballroom at 7 p.m. with cocktails, followed by dinner and live entertainment. The Wobbly Barn will have dinner followed by live entertainment.

Cruise from Budapest to Bucharest

Photo By Mastermindsro
The cruise takes you to the cities, towns and natural wonders of Eastern Europe, where so many fairy tales began. Experience bustling Budapest, cosmopolitan capital of Hungary; sail past dramatic natural wonders like the soaring white cliffs of the Iron Gate region; visit the Serbian capital of Belgrade and the Croatian town of Osijek; discover historical treasures of Bulgaria; and admire the graceful charms of the Romanian capital of Bucharest.

Take a tour of Hungary’s capital, exploring both the “Buda” and “Pest” sides. Begin in Pest, where you see the National Opera House and visit historic Heroes’ Square. Cross the Chain Bridge to Buda, where you stroll Fishermen’s Hill to Fishermen’s Bastion and Matthias Church. You can take an afternoon excursion to Visegrád. With a population of less than 2,000, Visegrád was used as a royal retreat, and it has no fewer than three castles. Enjoy the view of the Danube Bend from the hexagonal Solomon Tower at the Lower Castle.

Next stop is Kalocsa, Hungary. Take a guided city tour including a visit to the Archbishop’s Palace. Then, you are treated to a performance of traditional Puszta horsemanship. Return aboard and enjoy your lunch during departure.

Wake up in Vukovar and have breakfast before your excursion to the Croatian city of Osijek. Inhabited by humans since Neolithic times, this area has had several heydays under the Romans, the Ottomans and the Habsburgs; now it is a pleasant town popular for its baroque buildings, parks and monuments. Return aboard for lunch and departure.

Wake up in Belgrade, capital of Serbia. Take a guided walk through the grounds of Kalemegdan Fortress, now a beautiful park; also see the Orthodox cathedral and stop at the Square of the Republic. Lunch aboard, then more time to explore Belgrade’s gracious architecture or visit one of its many museums, like the Nikola Tesla Museum. Dine aboard or experience some of Belgrade’s nightlife.

Enjoy scenic cruising as you travel through one of the most picturesque areas of the Lower Danube. The Iron Gate is one of Europe’s most dramatic natural wonders, a spectacular narrow gorge with enormous white limestone cliffs. Your cruise director will provide commentary about the region and scenic points of interest as you sail toward Vidin.

Arrive in the picturesque Bulgarian port of Vidin during breakfast, then take an excursion to see Belogradchik Fortress, built right into the striking Belogradchik Rocks, and enjoy breathtaking views. Lunch aboard is followed by time to explore Vidin’s city center, Orthodox churches and the ruins of the city’s once-grand synagogue. Depart during dinner.

After breakfast, disembark at Russe for a full-day excursion to Bulgaria’s former capital, Veliko Tarnovo. There you will see Tsaravets Hill and the ruins of the royal castle.  Shop for local crafts along Samovodska Charshia. Proceed to Arbanasi for lunch in a local restaurant and a guided tour of the Nativity Church with its intricate floor-to-ceiling murals and icons.

Disembark in Oltenita and proceed to the superior first class hotel in the heart of the Bucharest for a 1-night stay.  Enjoy a half-day tour of Romania’s lovely capital city. See the Arch of Triumph, the Antim Monastery and the iconic Palace of Justice, completing your tour at the Palace of Parliament. Enjoy a final evening in Bucharest.

Twas the Night Before Christmas

Twas the night before Christmas, when all through the house
Not a creature was stirring, not even a mouse;
The stockings were hung by the chimney with care
In hopes that St. Nicholas soon would be there;

The children were nestled all snug in their beds,
While visions of sugar-plums danced in their heads;
And mamma in her kerchief, and I in my cap,
Had just settled our brains for a long winter's nap,

When out on the lawn there arose such a clatter,
I sprang from the bed to see what was the matter.
Away to the window I flew like a flash,
Tore open the shutters and threw up the sash.

The moon on the breast of the new-fallen snow
Gave the lustre of mid-day to objects below,
When, what to my wondering eyes should appear,
But a miniature sleigh, and eight tiny reindeer,

With a little old driver, so lively and quick,
I knew in a moment it must be St. Nick.
More rapid than eagles his coursers they came,
And he whistled, and shouted, and called them by name:

Now, Dasher! now, Dancer! now, Prancer and Vixen!
On, Comet! on, Cupid! on, Donder and Blitzen!
To the top of the porch! to the top of the wall!
Now dash away! dash away! dash away all!"

As dry leaves that before the wild hurricane fly,
When they meet with an obstacle, mount to the sky;
So up to the house-top the coursers they flew,
With the sleigh full of Toys, and St. Nicholas too.

And then, in a twinkling, I heard on the roof
The prancing and pawing of each little hoof.
As I drew in my head, and was turning around,
Down the chimney St. Nicholas came with a bound.

He was dressed all in fur, from his head to his foot,
And his clothes were all tarnished with ashes and soot;
A bundle of Toys he had flung on his back,
And he looked like a peddler just opening his pack.

His eyes—how they twinkled! his dimples how merry!
His cheeks were like roses, his nose like a cherry!
His droll little mouth was drawn up like a bow,
And the beard of his chin was as white as the snow;

The stump of a pipe he held tight in his teeth,
And the smoke it encircled his head like a wreath;
He had a broad face and a little round belly,
That shook when he laughed, like a bowlful of jelly.

He was chubby and plump, a right jolly old elf,
And I laughed when I saw him, in spite of myself;
A wink of his eye and a twist of his head,
Soon gave me to know I had nothing to dread;

He spoke not a word, but went straight to his work,
And filled all the stockings; then turned with a jerk,
And laying his finger aside of his nose,
And giving a nod, up the chimney he rose;

He sprang to his sleigh, to his team gave a whistle,
And away they all flew like the down of a thistle.
But I heard him exclaim, ere he drove out of sight,
"Happy Christmas to all, and to all a good-night."

Tips for Holiday Air Travel

Show up early! Really really early.  Airports can be dull, but it's better to risk boredom then rolling up at the last minute, sprinting through a mob of travelers, only to watch as your plane leaves the gate. And running with a carry on? Not cool. So show up early, allow yourself enough time to deal with any snags that may occur. You may even encounter a kindly gate agent willing to put you through on an earlier flight. Don't set yourself up for air travel failure.

Get the extra legroom seat! It’s not that much more, and  you'll be happy without your own knees in your face for 5 hours?  You’ll actually have enough space to comfortably use a laptop, no matter how far back the guy in front of you slams his seat back. Some airlines, such as JetBlue, even throw in privileges such as priority check-in and boarding.

Don’t waste your miles on some little seat in economy! Instead, use them to upgrade. 15,000 Miles on United gets you an upgrade from your $300 coach fare to a $1,500 (or more) business or first class seat, which is clearly a better value.

Don’t check a bag! And don’t try cramming everything into some large too heavy carry on either. Send them four or five days ahead to your destination via FedEx Ground or the like. It’s makes it so easy!  No sitting in line to check a bag, no waiting on a bag, no lugging around a bag, no fighting for overhead space.  Plus, it's often cheaper than paying checked bag fees. FedEx has much better tracking and they'll even insure your valuables. Save your cash for that extra legroom seat.

Be nice to airline staff, even when you don’t want to be. Turning into a human geyser of F-words, rolling your eyes, or getting snippety with the agent will, in most cases, only make things worse. Plus too much attitude at the airport nowadays and you could very well be hauled off by the police. Won’t that make for a memorable holiday story!  So if you find yourself getting steamed, find your happy place, kill them with kindness! Flash a little smile, ask how they’re holding up during all this crazy holiday time, offer a compliment, be nice!

Ok, so those neck pillows you always see at the airport?  They may look ridiculous but they are pretty comfortable . So grab one!  You don't have to wear it around the airport. Hide it in a tote bag if you’re too embarrassed to be seen with one. But when you’re stuck in the middle seat, you’ll be thrilled to have it. And so will your seatmates when you’re not flopping around like a bobble head in your sleep. So grab one! They're cheap!

Load up your iPad, laptop, Kindle, whatever gadget with plenty of good stuff to keep your attention during the flight. Now’s a great time to make a dent in whatever series everyone was raving about that you have yet to see.  Just know, nothing risqué or NC-17. Keep it classy! And if your battery power starts to fade, have a book handy.

Splurge on the noise canceling headphones. When that kid starts crying at top volume in the next row, or the guy from Accounting is barking nonstop into his cell phone, you won’t have to suffer through any of it!

You’ll get cranky on an empty stomach, so remember to eat a little something! And don’t rely on the airline to feed you. Pack a few things in your carry on, such as fruit, or a granola bar, or grab something at the airport. And don’t forget to stay hydrated. If they do happen to offer food on your flight, avoid the crazy stuff, just stick to the cheese plate and a ginger ale.

Christmas in Bethlehem

As one might imagine, Christmas in Bethlehem, the city where Jesus was born, is a major event. Some of Bethlehem's Christmas celebrations would be familiar to Europeans and North Americans - the streets are strung with Christmas lights, there is a Christmas market and Christmas plays are performed.

But other events, which are the most important religiously, are special to Bethlehem and in keeping with the traditions of the Holy Land. These consist of multiple services and processions led by many different Christian denominations, including Catholic, Protestant, Greek Orthodox, Ethiopian, Armenian and more.

Most Christmas processions pass through Manger Square, the plaza outside the Basilica of the Nativity, which stands on the traditional site of Jesus' birth. Catholic services take place in St. Catherine's Church and Protestants often hold services at the Shepherds' Fields.

Bethlehem Christmas celebrations stretch for a long period, as different denominations celebrate Christmas on different days. Roman Catholics and Protestants celebrate Christmas on December 25; Greek, Syrian and other Orthodox Christians celebrate Christmas on January 6; and Armenian Christians celebrate Christmas on January 18.

Cruise Tips For Alaska

When should I go to Alaska?
The cruise season in Alaska runs from May to September, with July and August the most popular months.  May is best for wildflowers and September is great for the fall foliage, but the weather may be fickle.

Is cruising expensive?
Just do the math.  Compare a one week cruise against a week at a resort.  With a cruise vacation, your meals, accommodations, entertainment, and most activities are included in the fare.  It's easy to stick to your budget.  Plus, on a cruise you get to visit many different ports of call.  Unpack once and settle in for a journey that can take you anywhere you want to go.  At the end of the day, retreat to your own floating resort to enjoy fabulous cuisine, world-class entertainment and be lulled to sleep at sea.

What about seasickness?
Today's cruise ships are engineered with state-of-the-art stabilizers that greatly reduce ship motion.  If seasickness is a concern, choose a cabin towards the center of the ship where ship movement is less pronounced.  Also, consult your doctor about medications you can take in case of motion sickness.

What is there to do on the ship?
 Lots!  How would you like to go ice skating, rock climbing, practice your golf swing, shoot a few hoops, go to the casino, see a Broadway-style show, do some shopping, workout at the gym, relax at the spa, take a dip in the pool, log onto the Internet, all without ever leaving the ship!  Plus, there are some fantastic innovations such as Royal Caribbean's new Voyager of the Seas, which will feature an ice skating rink and rock climbing wall.  Every ship has a Cruise Director whose job it is to make sure each guest has the opportunity to make the most of their vacation.  In fact, there are so many things to do that you will probably book a longer cruise next time.

Are there different classes of service?
Every guest can enjoy the use of any of the ship's facilities.  The price and category of staterooms are based primarily on size and location.  Whichever category you book, you'll enjoy the same courteous service, dining, activities, and entertainment as everyone else.

What is there to do in port?
 So much that you'll have a hard time choosing!  You can go off on your own.  Or take a guided tour.  You can search ancient native villages or hunt for shopping bargains.  Ride a raft over river rapids, bicycle down the side of a 10,000 foot volcano, or ride a horse across miles of hills and beaches.  Climb a waterfall or listen to live bands.  Follow the footsteps of history or the wake of a waterskiing boat.  If there's still time enjoy a folklore show.  Play golf or tennis.  Eat native foods.  Learn how to windsurf.  Sun and swim or catch a record marlin.  Go to a nightclub or glittering casino.  Take a cable car to the top of a mountain.  Explore dark catacombs.  In short, a cruise is the easiest way to see new places and do all the things you dream of.  Cruising is the perfect way to sample a number of destinations that you may want to return to for another vacation and you never have to pack and unpack - the destinations come to you.  Don't forget that we can book you on almost any cruise in the world, not just to Alaska!

How about family cruises?
25% of cruise vacations are booked by families with children.  Most cruise lines offer special programs, facilities and activities based on age.  Children and teens not only get to meet kids their own age but often travel at a substantially reduced rate.

What about the night life?
At night, life aboard a cruise ship really turns on.  There's dancing, live entertainment in nightclubs, discos and lounges, feature films, and parties with all your new friends.  Most ships have casinos.  There are also many special events like the Captain's Cocktail Party, Passenger Talent Night, the Masquerade Parade, and the Late Night Buffet (for that one last bite to tide you over 'til breakfast).  And the night can go on as long as you want.  Even until the spectacle of sunrise at sea.

What should I pack?
Pack like you would for any resort.  Cruise vacations are casual by day, whether you're on the ship or ashore.  In the evening, ships vary as to dress.  As on shore, attire is dictated by occasion.  For the Captain's Gala, for example, you'll probably want to wear something more formal, such as a dark suit, or cocktail dress; perhaps even a dinner jacket or gown.  But don't buy a tuxedo just for the trip.

Can I use my hair dryer or shaver?
Most ships have 110-volt outlets in the staterooms.  But do check with our cruise consultant to be sure.

Tipping etiquette
Tipping is a matter of individual preference.  Most cruise lines will include a tipping guideline in your stateroom; a general rule of thumb is to plan for about $2.50 to $3.00 per person per day for your room steward and dining room waiter, about half that amount for your busboy.  A few cruise lines include tipping in the price and will inform you.  Other ship board personnel can be tipped for special services at your discretion.

Skiing in British Columbia, Canada

Andysonic777 at en.wikipedia
British Columbia has the most ski resorts of any province in Canada.

All in all, there are at least 55 British Columbia ski resorts that offer downhill skiing.

British Columbia is blessed with tons of snow, light, airy powder, high mountain ranges, and a moderate climate.

Each of the province's six tourist regions has ski resorts, the most famous being Whistler Blackcomb two hours outside of Vancouver. Ski enthusiasts who don't want to stray far from Vancouver can find downhill skiing 15 minutes from downtown at Grouse Mountain.

 Whistler / Blackcomb has more than 8,000 acres of skiable terrain with 37 lifts and over 200 marked runs. There are three glaciers and 13 alpine bowls. Charming pedestrian-only base village has a little of everything, whether you’re interested in a relaxing spa experience, shopping or a night on the town, this bustling town will perfectly complement your day on the slopes.

For those looking for even more adventure, British Columbia reigns supreme as one of the world's best heli-skiing, cat-skiing, and backcountry ski destinations.

River Cruise on the Severn in the UK

The full river cruise aboard the Edward Elgar Riverboat Hotel provides the most elegant river cruise and tour to rival the best European river cruises. A combination of superb views, sightseeing and an excursion on the Severn Valley Railway with more river cruising than the best boat cruise on the river Thames. There are also opportunities for walking, bird-watching and friendly socialising. Sailing from Gloucester all the way up to Stourport-on-Severn and back over 7 days and 6 nights.

Cruise up the River Severn for dinner and our overnight mooring just South of Tewkesbury. There you can visit the nearby Lower Lode Inn before retiring to your cosy cabin. Then cruise to Worcester, passing through two huge locks and enjoying good views of the Malvern Hills on the way. After lunch you may visit Worcester Cathedral nearby, the Civil War Commandery, or just go shopping. In the evening, enjoy the Captain’s Cocktail Party.

You can take a short coach trip up to Bewdley and board the acclaimed Severn Valley Steam Railway, for a fascinating rail trip up to Bridgenorth. This is an interesting town to explore, with strong links to the Industrial Revolution. Sailing back down the river to Upton-upon-Severn, you can take a stroll over the bridge into this pretty little town and visit the ‘Pepperpot’ church tower Heritage Centre, or Tudor House Museum.

Next cruise to Tewkesbury where you may like to walk to the 12th Century Tewkesbury Abbey, which has the biggest Norman Tower in the country.  Later on, cruise back to Gloucester and enjoy a thrilling ride up through the lock from the river to the main docks.  In the afternoon, join the interesting guided tour of the sights nearby, and visit Gloucester Cathedral or the Designer Shops at Gloucester Quays. In the evening, there is some excellent live entertainment after dinner.

Christmas In Mexico

Several weeks before Christmas, elaborately decorated market stalls or puestos are set up in the plazas of every town and city. Some people travel for days from remote areas to get to these markets. The puestos offer crafts of every conceivable kind, foods such as cheese, bananas, nuts, and cookies, and flowers such as orchids and poinsettias.

The poinsettia is native to Mexico and is believed to have first been used in connection with Christmas in the 17th century when Mexican Franciscans included the flowers in their Christmas celebration. There is a legend connected with the flower. A little boy named Pablo was walking to the church in his village to visit the Nativity scene, when he realized he had nothing to offer the Christ Child. He saw some green branches growing along the roadside and gathered them up. Other children scoffed, but when he laid them by the manger, a brilliant red star-shaped flower appeared on each branch.

The main Christmas celebration in Mexico is called las posadas, which refers to processions reenacting Joseph and Mary's search for a place to stay in Bethlehem. The processions begin nine days before Christmas because the original journey from Nazareth to Bethlehem took nine days. Friends and family members divide themselves into two groups - pilgrims and innkeepers. The pilgrims travel from house to house asking for a shelter and are refused at each until they finally reach the house where an alter and Nativity scene have been set up. Here the pilgrims are admitted with great rejoicing, a traditional prayer is spoken, and the party begins. Food and drink are served and then children take turns trying to break open the pinata.

Alaskan Wild Flowers

A favorite wildflower is the Forget-me-not, which also has the official title as the Alaska State Flower. The Arctic version of the flower is the more common variety in Alaska and it coloring is apt for the state. Consisting of a small five-petaled blue bloom with a yellow "eye," the Forget-me-not is of the same coloring as Alaska's State Flag. The plant is known to be very hearty and can grab hold in sandy and gravelly soil. It flourishes as far north as Barrow on the Arctic Ocean.

The Alaska Fireweed is "Alaska's Calendar." Atypical of most flowers, the Fireweed blooms from the bottom petals and works its way up. As the petals open over a course of a few weeks, it eventually becomes "topped out" and Alaskans regard this as the sign that summer is nearly over. Vast fields of Fireweed can be seen throughout Alaska and are the perfect roadside decoration. Fireweed comes in two varieties: the standard Fireweed plant and Dwarf Fireweed. Dwarf Fireweed typically grows in more arctic and harsh areas of Alaska while the standard Fireweed can grow as high as five and six feet in the warm and sunny climates of the Kenai Peninsula.

Perhaps the most exotic flower is found in the Southcentral area of Alaska including the Kenai Peninsula. The Chocolate Lily, also known as Indian Rice, is a beautiful rich brown color. Although the odor is considered unpleasant, the bloom truly looks chocolately enough to eat. The plant can grow up to 24 inches tall and thrives best in moist lowland meadows. A flower that often grows along side of the Chocolate lily is the Wild Iris. Blooming in mid to late June, the Wild Iris often grows in large fields and meadows with high water content. One of the best viewing areas for both the Wild Iris and the Chocolate Lily is the "Eklutna Flats" directly south of the village of Eklutna along the Glenn Highway. Like the Lily, the Wild Iris is best viewed in early summer and has a short bloom period. Another prolific bloom is the Nootka Lupine. The Lupine, with its deep blue and purplish coloring, can easily be spotted throughout Alaska. This plant can also grow quite tall (nearly five feet) and is hearty enough to grow on gravel bars, dry slopes, as well as meadows. Often seen blooming along the highways, the Lupine, like the Fireweed, is a popular photography subject. Areas around the Seward Highway near the turn off for Portage Glacier are good for photographing Lupine with the Turnagain Arm and Kenai Mountains as a breath-taking backdrop.

Winter Travel Tips

 1. I have found that the biggest, meanest problems for travelers frequently occur at connecting airports. If your first outbound flight is canceled and you end up returning to your own home from your local airport, that's one thing; if you are stuck in your vacation hotel hoping to get a flight home, that's a bit worse. But when you're stuck in a connecting airport in Texas calling hotels and praying for a place to stay, you're in what is call the worst-case scenario. For this reason, you should fly nonstop whenever possible.

2. If you absolutely must fly with a connection, watch your layover times carefully. If a weather delay causes you to miss your connection, you might be out of luck, as the airline is not necessarily obligated to find you a seat on the next flight, and often cannot logistically do so if flights are full or unavailable. (For more details, check out Passenger Rights.) If you have a really tight connection time and your flight is running late, let your flight attendant know, and he or she may be able to make arrangements to hold your next flight, or at least get you off your first flight quickly.

3. Again, if you must fly with a connection, check weather at your connecting cities as well as at your departure and destination airports. We all want to know what the weather is like for the departure and arrival airports (particularly if we're traveling on vacation), but for the same reasons stated above you'll want to know what is going on at your connecting airport as well. If the weather looks very bad, you may want to contact your airline to see if it can reroute you; it may be in its best interest to do so. If it does look like you will need rerouting, your chances of getting on a different flight will be greatly enhanced if you've already done the research yourself to determine which alternate flights might work best. Don't count on a gate agent to know about or search the schedules of other airlines. It isn't likely to happen.

4. Try to book your connection through a southern city where weather shouldn't be an issue. There are no guarantees here, as northern airports tend to be better equipped to deal with winter conditions, and a snowstorm can almost wholly shut down an airport that more often suffers from too much sun. However, your odds are better in places that rarely see ice or snow.

5. Choose a morning flight, for two reasons: First, you are far less likely to have your flight affected by problems at other airports. Second, if your flight is canceled or badly delayed, your options for alternate flights are greatly increased, improving your odds for getting on a different flight by the end of the day.

6. Consider alternate airports. Very often the problem is not solely weather concerns, but the overall volume at the airport, as many major airports are simply not built to handle the amount of volume they are taking on these days. This can be especially effective when flying out of the biggest cities that offer multiple airport choices -- Los Angeles, New York, Chicago, Houston -- where second-tier airports tend not to be too far out of town, and are tied into the transportation grid.

7. Get ahead of the game at security. Before you even get in line, put all your gear and pocket change in a sleeve of your carry-on bag. With so much valuable stuff getting dumped into plastic buckets all day, every day, it's inevitable that some of that stuff gets left behind, dropped, damaged, broken or even stolen. If you take 15 seconds to stow everything, you'll make the time up twice over on either side of the security gate, and won't risk losing cell phones, wallets, keys and the like.

8. The annual holiday gift wrapping rule: Don't wrap gifts, security will have to rip them open. With the TSA searching checked bags as well as carry-ons, this applies to all of your luggage, not just what you bring onto the plane with you. Consider shipping your gifts ahead of time or wrapping them once you get to your destination.

9. Finally, avoid peak travel dates as best you can, particularly holiday weekends.

Pearl Harbor Oahu Hawaii

The Date of Infamy that launched an epic conflict with Japan took place here in the early morning hours of December 7, 1941. The tranquil waters of Pearl Harbor were forever disrupted by the tides of war. The USS Arizona and 1,177 of her crew were among the first casualties of the Pacific War; the USS Arizona Memorial stands above the sunken vessel and her fallen sailors, serving as a reminder of their sacrifice and commitment.

A must visit for every American at least once in their lives. Within the grounds of Pearl Harbor are a number of exhibits, displays, memorials, and museums, honoring not only the 1,177 victims of the Japanese attacks, but all of those who bravely served in World War II. The USS Missouri Battleship and the Pacific Aviation Museum are located on Ford Island, and offer unique insites into the war. The USS Bowfin Submarine takes visitors through narrow corridors that often were submerged for months at a time.

Pearl Harbor Oahu Tours are combined with many of the top sites around the island of Oahu, including the world famous North Shore, the Polynesian Cultural Center, and a driving tour through downtown Honolulu's historic district. Inter-island tours from the Big Island, Maui, and Kauai allow visitors to Oahu's neighbor islands to experience Pearl Harbor's Museums -- including the USS Arizona Memorial, USS Bowfin Submarine, USS Missouri Battleship, and the Pacific Aviation Museum -- while enjoying an island hopping trip to the most visited island in Hawaii.

Christmas in Wales

The Christmas celebrations here are in adherence to the British observation of the festival. Christmas Day is celebrated here annually on December 25.

In the days leading to Christmas, a small tree is beautifully decorated with colourful lights and trinkets and set up in every Welsh household. Paper decorations of various colours and lovely flowers (such as mistletoe and holly) are used to adorn the interiors of houses. Mistletoe is believed to protect the home from evil and holly stands as a symbol of eternal life.

"Eisteddfodde" or Caroling is the most pleasurable activity of the Welsh Christmas. The Welsh are great lovers of music and every year they throng to local churches in large numbers to sing carols during Christmastime. These are sung often to the accompaniment of a harp. Caroling is also done in individual homes around the Christmas tree. In many places, groups of people set out at dawn on Christmas morning, going from house to house and caroling before the doors and windows of the houses they visit. Families wake from sleep and traditionally ask them in for refreshments.

Every year, new carols are submitted by thousands of enthusiastic carolers in the hope that their composition may be included in the list of popular carols already known and sung in Wales. During Christmas, many people gather in the public square for the announcement of the lucky one who would win the annual prize for submitting the best music for a new carol, and the formal pronouncement of it as the carol of the year.
On Christmas Day, people in many parts of Wales wake up very early to attend a special church service known as "Plygain" (daybreak), that is held between 3am. and 6am. Men gather in local churches to sing(mainly unaccompanied) three or four part harmony carols in a service that goes on for nearly three hours. These days, the custom is seen to be practiced mainly in the rural areas. The service over, feasting and drinking begins and continues for the entire day. Gifts are exchanged later during the day. The Christmas meal traditionally consists of roasted turkey with different vegetables, followed by a delicious pudding.

15 Good Reasons To Use A Travel Agent

 1) Don't trust your travel plans, credit cards and other personal information, especially your home address once your travel dates are known, to an 800 number or the Internet.

 2) Often seat numbers selected through an "on-line source" come back as unconfirmed after you've purchased a non-refundable And non-changeable ticket. This Never happens when using a travel agent.

 3) Press one for this, press two for that, press three for English and press four to repeat. Using a travel agent, there is no pressing, only a "one on one" personal service and a real walk-in office with personalized service.

 4) Travel agents can tell you, from experience, what tours to take, and which ones not to take. The internet can only "advertise and sell" them.

 5) Planning a trip is often stressful, with many details and options to worry about. Travel agents do all of the work for you, resulting in less stress for you.

 6) With all of the countless travel insurance options available these days, it can become totally confusing. A travel agent can help you pick the plan that works best for your needs. Or maybe you totally forgot about travel insurance?

 7) Where to go, and not to go with kids...... travel agents can help you find great  locations that are kid-friendly. Likewise, travel agents can also recommend excellent locations that are open to adults only.

 8) Avoid International flight confusion and let a travel agent organize those complex flights that "on-line" search engines don't cover, and can't do.

 9) Experience personalized service using a travel agent because you're not  booking through an impersonal website, or some voice 9,000 miles away in a  foreign country. You are talking to your neighbor down the road, someone who knows you, and someone who will take the time to find out what is important to you and the vacation that's just right for you.

 10) You Googled "Caribbean cruise," and came up with 17.8 million responses! Who is the honest choice? Who has the best price? Need a little help editing those choices?

 11) How many hours were you on-hold with the airline when your flight was cancelled because of a snowstorm, that no one told you about?

 12) Travel agents offer "one-stop shopping" and can handle every aspect of  your trip from airline tickets to lodging, ground transportation, activities, tours and offer you an array of options and price quotes from a variety of travel suppliers, giving You the upper hand when making your final travel decisions.

 13) Best value for your hard earned money...... travel agents can help your  travel dollars go farther because they have access to finding all sorts of "deals"  ranging from flights to hotels to dinner recommendations.

 14) Travel agents must be doing something right...... we sell 51% of all airline  tickets, 87% of all cruises, 81% of all tours and vacation packages, 47% of all hotels and resorts, and 45% of all car rentals.

 15) Contacting the Attorney General to resolve the fact that the on-line travel source you booked through has billed your credit card three times instead  of once is probably a good idea.
