Casa da Cisterna, Portugal

Casa da Cisterna is a fabulously restored guest house on several levels in the historical village of Castelo Rodrigo. The town is named after the ruined castle and surrounded by ancient walls with views across the Douro Valley and to Spain.

Seduced and fascinated by the charms of rural life in Castelo Rodrigo, owners Ana and António have converted once ruined buildings next to the ancient water cistern for the village, giving rise to the Casa da Cisterna name. As well as beautifully decorated rooms and cool stone walls, the uppermost terrace has a plunge pool where spectacular views reach far across the roofs of the town to the distant plateau beyond.

The town of Castelo Rodrigo, from which you can see as far as Spain and the Douro Valley, has not had a peaceful history. Yet the beauty of the village, and the moving image of Santiago Matamouros in the church of the Reclamador, will live long in your memory. To walk through the medieval gates of this ancient village is to journey down the paths of history.
