National Park of American Samoa American Samoa

Located in the Southwest Pacific Ocean, the national park is on three volcanic and mountainous islands clothed in tropical rainforest, ringed with rugged cliffs, glistening beaches, and coral reefs.

The national park preserves and protects tropical rainforests, coral reefs, fruit bats, and the Samoan culture.

Because the park is relatively new and remotely located, you will not find the usual facilities of parks on the mainland. Instead, with a bit of explorer's spirit, you can discover secluded villages, observe tropical forest plants and wildlife, snorkel coral reefs, and explore the magnificent island and sea vistas.

American Samoa, the only U.S. territory south of the equator, consists of five rugged, highly eroded volcanic islands and two coral atolls.  The land area of the territory is 76 square miles.

American Samoa is steeped in history as our Territory was once administered by the US Navy. The American Samoa Historic Preservation Office (ASHPO) has produced a “Walking Tour of Historic Fagatogo” booklet and the National Park of American Samoa office has maps to lead you up to the gun placements at Blunts and Breakers Points that guarded the Pago Pago Harbor entrance during World War II.

Take a visit to the Jean P. Haydon Museum in Fagatogo which houses historical artifacts and exhibits including a small exhibit of American Samoa’s link to the Apollo Moon Missions. During the space race in the 1960’s and 70’s the Apollo Moon Missions on their return to earth splashed down in the Territory’s waters with all the astronauts transiting through Tutuila on their way back to the US mainland. On one of the missions a small American Samoa flag that was carried to the moon by the astronauts, and this flag and three moon stones were presented to the Territory by then President Richard Nixon.
