How to Packing for an Alaskan Cruise

It's hard to pack for an Alaskan cruise because you need to be prepared for anything that the weather can throw at you.

You have to resist the urge to pack everything from beach wear to ski attire, especially with airlines limits on luggage.

Juneau in summer can reach 90 degrees. but the average temperature in August is between 59 and 64 degrees. Perhaps you'll want to pack just one pair of shorts. This may assure it will get hotter than predicted.

Close to glaciers it can be cold, pack a winter hat and gloves and a lightweight but warm jacket. On top of this you can layer a rain jacket with hood, since it is common to encounter rain in the Inside Passage in August.

Pack the rest of your casual clothing to layer.

Throw in a shade hat, sunglasses and sunscreen into the suitcase to protect from sun, because when it does shine in Southeast Alaska it shines (especially when reflected off the ice). Also bring bug repellent, there are more than 50 types of mosquitoes in Alaska.

On a one-week cruise, your ship may have one or two formal nights with other nights smart casual. So pack some dressy clothing and accessories.

You will need sneakers that can get muddy and a pair of dress shoes.

Bring a swimsuit to use in the hot tub and the spa's Thermal Suite. Also bring exercise attire.

In your luggage should be a pair of binoculars for close-up viewing of glaciers calving and Alaska's plentiful wildlife, a camera or two (in case one gets wet), a power strip (because you will probably bring more electronic devices then there will be plugs in the cabin) and a bag for dirty clothes.
