Off the Beaten Path - Lake Geneva

A visit to France wouldn't be complete without visiting Paris, but there are areas of the country that are often overlooked and well worth a special visit.

Lake Geneva
Lake Geneva is known as Lac LĂ©man in France. This is a lake on the north side of the Alps, shared between Switzerland and France. It is one of the largest lakes in Western Europe and the largest on the course of the Rhone.

Lake Geneva is not all Swiss. Much of its southern shoreline is French. And while tourism has made some inroads, this lakeside stretch is unchartered tourist territory. The sweet spot is the villages of Nernier and Yvoire.

Nernier
This is a little shoreline village with cobbled streets, a pebble beach, and a quaint port. Visit the port where you can have lunch at Restaurant du Lac and set sail on the lake in an old-fashioned steamer.

With its bigger and more renowned neighboring village of Yvoire, Nernier shares the medieval village center and beautiful flower decoration during the summer season.

Restraunt du Lac
Located on the village port of Nernier Lakeside, this lake restaurant welcomes you with its shaded terrace and a breathtaking view of Lake Geneva.

From the floor to the patio through the large terrace, this charming setting will make you spend unforgettable moments as you dine on their delicious cuisine.

Their menu will awaken your taste buds with specialties from the lake and land, and seasonal products.

Yvoire
Located on the French shore of Lake Geneva, between Geneva and Evian, the village of Yvoire is nicknamed the “gem of the lake”. Yvoire is a magical place where authenticity and history are mixed.  It is well known for its medieval buildings and beautiful flower decoration during the summer season. It is also one of the "most beautiful villages of France".

Built in the early 14th century and fortified by Amadeus V , this medieval bourg, ideally situated on the expanse separating the "little lake" from the "great lake", still possesses some of the essential elements of the fortifications of the 14th Century including the castle, doors, and ramparts.

Known as a modest fishing village in the beginning of the century, Yvoire is now ranked as one of the International Laureates of Floral Decorations.  Don’t miss a visit to the Garden of Five Senses located In the heart of the village. Classified as a “Remarkable Garden” by the Ministry of Culture, this little piece of green heaven invites you to a poetic discovery of the plants with your five senses.  In the fortified center, you will travel back to Middle-Age by discovering the gates and ramparts which used to protect the village and the castle from the modern era to discover a picturesque site which has been perfectly preserved. Finally enjoy one of the terraces, where you can sip a glass or have dinner in front of the spectacular landscape of Lake Geneva, Jura, Switzerland and the Alps.
