Off the Beaten Path - Bahamas

Although this list might contain a few places more on the well-traveled path, we thought they were still worth a mention.

The Cloisters Nassau
Stroll about the remains of a 14th century French Monastery that was imported, stone by stone, to the United States by the newspaper Baron William Randolph Hearst in the 1920s; 40 years later the Cloisters were bought by Huntington Hartford and installed at the top of a hill on Paradise Island overlooking Nassau Harbor.

Queen's Staircase
The Queen's Staircase, commonly referred to as the 66 steps, is a major landmark that is located in the Fort Fincastle Historic Complex in Nassau. It was hewn out of solid limestone rock by slaves between 1793 and 1794 and it is said that it provided a direct route from Fort Fincastle to Nassau City. These steps were later named in honor of Queen Victoria, who reigned in Britain for 64 years from 1837 to 1901.

There are only 65 steps visible because the pathway that leads to the steps was paved and the bottom step is buried under the asphalt. Great photo opportunity.

Free admission - open every day.

The Heritage Museum of the Bahamas
The Heritage Museum of the Bahamas is a collection of items spanning more than a 1000 years covering natural history, Columbus, Piracy, Slavery etc........

The Heritage Museum of The Bahamas is the foundation of Graycliff's new Heritage Village.

Located in the historically preserved Mountbatten House on West Hill Street, the museum offers visitors - local and international alike - an in depth look at the history and heritage of The Bahamas, ranging from the prehistoric times to today.

Ardastra Gardens, Zoo and Conservation Center
Head to the heart of Nassau for a unique visit to the Ardastra Gardens & Zoo. As the first and only zoo in The Bahamas, it features more than four acres of lush tropical gardens inhabited by a dazzling array of animal species—including the national bird of The Bahamas, the Caribbean flamingo. Hand-feed playful parrots, take a free educational lecture on wildlife conservation and be sure to watch the world-famous marching flamingos in action.

The National Art Gallery of The Bahamas
Housed in the historic Villa Doyle, built in the 1860s and lovingly restored in the 1990s, the NAGB preserves the National Collection of Bahamian Art, part of which is on permanent display on the ground floor. Upper galleries engage the history of Bahamian Art and Visual culture and support contemporary movements and experimental contemporary art practice through temporary exhibitions. The NAGB also has an extensive public program schedule, community and regional projects and partnerships, arts education workshops, and a free public art library.

Pirates of Nassau Museum
The Pirates of Nassau interactive museum provides an opportunity for you to experience the Golden Age of Piracy.

Providing a great mix of entertainment and history, your pirate adventure begins on a moonlit dock amidst the sounds of lapping water and pirates celebrating in a nearby tavern. Board a replica of the pirate ship “Revenge” and then enter into a world of cutlass-wielding bloodthirsty pirates.

Arrr, matey!
