Haleakalā National Park, Hawaii

This special place vibrates with stories of ancient and modern Hawaiian culture and protects the bond between the land and its people. The park also cares for endangered species, some of which exist nowhere else. Come visit this special place - renew your spirit amid stark volcanic landscapes and sub-tropical rain forest with an unforgettable hike through the backcountry.

Your visit to Haleakalā National Park might include a glimpse of a rare native bird, a hands-on experience with Hawaiian culture, breezes through the bamboo forest, or warm sun on your back as you hike a volcanic landscape.

First you have to choose the experience you are looking for and find out where to discover it. Do you want to spend the day visiting the summit area of the park? Or the coastal area? Do you have two days available so you can experience both? Perhaps you can spend a few days and plan an overnight adventure.

Whatever you choose, be sure you are prepared for your experience, remember that both the Summit and Kīpahulu Areas are remote, natural areas with few ammenities.

Haleakalā National Park was established in 1916 as park of Hawaiʻi National Park, within one week of the creation of the National Park Service. The Wilderness Area of Haleakalā National Park was designated on October 20, 1976 with 19,270 acres. This protected Wilderness expanded to 24,719 acres in 2005.

Haleakalā National Park has more endangered species than any other park in the NPS, including species that are listed as endangered by the US Fish and Wildlife Service but not native to the park.

If weather is favorable during your visit to the summit area of Haleakalā National Park you can see five other Hawaiian islands from the top of the mountain. The Summit Area of Haleakalā National Park is one of the best places in the world to view the night sky. Stick around after your hike to experience top-notch stargazing.
