Off the Beaten Path: West Virginia

West Virginia’s state parks provide all the amenities of a five-star resort plus the fun-filled recreation your heart longs for. Our lodges, cabins and campgrounds can accommodate families and groups of all sizes.  Enjoy horseback riding, golfing, hiking and biking all while taking in the splendor of the state’s mountains.

Your entire family can play in one of the nation’s most beautiful, natural playgrounds – West Virginia. Truly experience nature by camping, biking, hiking, rafting – you name it, the Mountain State has it. Re-connect as a family by creating your own adventurous, exciting journey.

Born of the Civil War
West Virginia is the only state born of the Civil War and is home to many special Civil War sites and events. Bring your family to the Mountain State and relive the days of conflict at one of the many Civil War re-enactments throughout the state.

State Park Retreats
Nature is your hostess at West Virginia State Parks (www.wvstateparks.com). From sleeping under the stars at a campsite to the comforts of a lodge, there are many options. While staying at a state park, enjoy recreational opportunities, including fishing, boating, hiking, horseback riding and golfing.

Mountain Biking
West Virginia has been hailed as a world class destination for mountain bikers because of our abundant trails, beautiful scenery and variety of terrain. A world of mountain biking excitement awaits you, from miles of trails in the 900,000-acre Monongahela National Forest to the 76 miles of the Greenbrier River Trail and the 78 miles of the North Bend Rail Trail.

Wilderness Adventure
West Virginia is a natural playground that offers plenty of surprises. For a peak experience, visit Spruce Knob , the highest point in the state. Take a boardwalk stroll over marshy bogs filled with ancient varieties of moss, orchids, insect-eating plants and other amazing flora at Cranberry Glades Botanical Area .

Here are just two of your many choices.

Blackwater Falls Park Lodge sits on the canyon's south rim, providing a sweeping view of the densely forested gorge. Each of the 54 air-conditioned guest rooms has a private bath, phone and color television. The lodge also features a game room and a sitting room with a cozy fireplace. The new 200-seat Harr Conference Center and indoor pool make Blackwater Lodge a comfortable retreat in a mountain setting.

Cabins at Blackwater Falls are completely furnished for housekeeping. They must be reserved for a minimum of one week during the summer, beginning the second Monday in June through Labor Day. Before and after the summer season, cabins may be rented by the day, two-day weekend or longer.

Cass Scenic Railroad State Park offers fully furnished and equipped restored company houses in a rural town and historic district. The rental houses have modern amenities such as electric appliances, microwave ovens, cable television, and modern bathrooms. They also have porches with swings, grills and picnic tables. Train excursions and interpretive programming, as well as restaurant and gift shops, are available in season.
